License Revoked
For Steering
NEW YORK CITY - A Baldwin
real estate broker and one of his
salespersons have had their
licenses revoked for racial steering.
New York Secretary of State
Mario Cuomo, took the legal
action following hearings during
which black and white members
of the Baldwin Oaks Civic Association
testified to incidents of
racial steering by employees of
Krander Realty. 1875 Grand
Avenue in Baldwin.
The broker, Bennett Josephs,
and Helen Blumer; a salesperson
with the firm, were the
two giyeii thfe department's most
severe penalties. Three other
salespersons -ryi Kowe. Susan ,
.Beaudette'and Linda'Davis —:
have had their licenses suspended
for a period of three months.
In commenting on the decision,
Cuomo" said "In today's society,
rampant racial steering-is_ultimately
as damaging to communities
as any other untrustworthy
practice' that a broker
could conceivably, engage in.
Such a policy clearly-jKarrants
the stiffest penalty we are empowered
to impose."
the Ciyic association, consisting
of homeowners in an integrated
community at. the north
end of Baldwirt. sent at least four
groups of "testers" to Kranzler
over a six-week period to try to
determine" if the firm was en-'
gaged in steering. .
All four of the groups referred
. to in the hearing decision as^^ to
" see allTbrick ranch homes — a
type common in; Baldwin Oaks.
Three of the groups specified, in
addhion,, that they would like to

Site Near Nautical Mile
FREEPORT - The village's Planning Board has received a request
for a change of zoning for a 4.4 acre site in the south end of Freeport.
just off the Nautical Mile. The applicant T.E.D. Construction Co.. Inc.
is requesting the change from Residence "A" Zone to Apartment Zone
in order to build an apartment house on the empty piece of property. -
The lot in question is bounded
on the south by Richmond Street;
on the north by Manhattan Street;
on the east by South Ocean
Avenue; and on the west by
Miller Avenue.
Tlie filed plans, drawn up by.
the New York City architectural
firm of Herbert Fleischer Associates,
shows 175 units. All would
have only one bedroom. The
apartments would rent, according
to T.E.D. Construction's attorney
in the zoning matter, Julius
Mintz. for $350-375 each. ; . ' ~
On.its tiprtheriy "and 'westerly
sides, the plot of land surround
with "A" Resideiice zoning; oh
its southerly and easterly sides,
the zoning if the surroundinf land
is industrial. .
The unimproved piece of
property is presently assessed at
S6J,440 which would bring into
the village treasury (at the
current S10.7I tajL-cate) approzi--
mately S658 annually.
The plan also calls for parking
for 266 cars.
TedGaeta, of T.E.D. Construction,
who is'also owner of The
Schooner Restaurant, pointed out
to THE LEADER that one bedroom
apartments do not usually
generate an increase in the school
census. 1 think, he'said, that the
proposal is "a good thing for the
people and for the community."
'' Gaeta also owns sorne property
south ofRichmond Street which
he • is presently having bulk-headed.
He mentioned that 1ie
has considered the site an excellent
one for a 150 unit
hotel/motel.
The village Planning Board
meets the second and fourth
Tuesday of each month in Village
Hall. While zoning variances are '
-decided by the Zoning Board of
Appeals, applications to change
zoning are heard by the Village
Board of Tniste.^s.
