. FREEPORT > Under last Sunday's sunny skies, and fortmutely more
temperate weather, 330 men, women and youngsters paddled their
way from Shelter Point Marina, at the foot of Woodcleft Canal. The
Freeport Chamber of Commerce's Third Annual Canoe and Kayak
Races drew huge crowds to the Woodcleft Avenue area, the waters
of anchored boats of all sizes held
many spectators, and Waterfront
Park — on South Long Beach
Avenue — where residents and
noii-residents alike were entertained
by .the Freeport Fire Department
Band. '
Races were held for youngsters,
women, men" and women-paddling:
together, , men alone, ^
and kayaks.'Duifing the "men's"

The day began" with the races
for the 10 to 15 year dds. Taking'
first place, in a mft sponsored by

Annua) Canoe and Kayak Races. Crowds thronged Waterfront Park;(shown In picture), as well as
other places along the race route, cheering their favorites on..Following the races, In which'over 300
paddled, the winners are shown with their trophies (see story this page for list of winning paddlers).

The present suggestion to rezone
was made by the consulting firm
of Raymond, Parish, Pine and
Weiner, wfibstudied the area under
the Commumty Development
Act (CDA) program- .
In requesting the change in
June, the village's Community
Development Director James
Dunne had mentioned "numerous"
inquiries by potentia]
developers and businesses
"indicating strong interest in
this area." Dunne had explained .
to the Board that tlie present PUD
zoning is not in line with those

waterfront condominium to be
constructed in ; Nassau County.
With financing arranged "6y a
local bank, two Freeport construction
contractors are in the process
of erecting a 61-unit deluxe condominium
at the head of Randall.

Sons, Inc. and Seacrest Construction
Corporation, are building the
apartments whidi are on a parcel

.Raceson Freeport's waterways, band-Ieader-producer Guy Lombardo
(r.) and Wes Carman, chairman of the Chamber of Commerce's Waterfront
Division and originator of the annual event, view the crowds that
had gathered. Lombardo, a Freeport resident and last year's Chamber
of Commerce "Man of the-Year" acts as the race's official starter.
Carman, and many of his fellow waterfront businessmen, using radios,
kept the canoeists In line at the start, afloat during the race and waterways
clear.
