business area bad already undergone
a roall transformation,,
told Chamber of Commerce and
Village representatives that they
were sorry they had not planned/
for an.overbang ,'when. they
conceived their. own plans..
.Scalamandr^ stated. that plan^
for the second year Community
Development Act funding have to-be
submitted in April. "Jim

>ommunity Development) is
' ig it his way and his way
ly," he said. He added that he.
ieved there would be money
available for the coverings, but if
not, the bu^ess pet^e (rf the
street could be assessed. -
The second speaker, Sy Jatr
mul, said of Scalamandre's plan,
"if you can get it, go for it." He
spoke, however, on a plan to
bnprove not only the business
but.aQ <rf Freeport. _.
RetaQ sales in Freeport, Janmul
noted, are down more in this area
than ta the rest of the Coimty.He.
described Freeport as a town
which is getting poorer. Consequently
less money is spent
here. Many stores are not able to
attract customers and when they
do, he added, parking is poor.
Although Federal'funding is
. limited,' Jarmul. said, private
development mon^ could' be
sought-and obtained.
In planning for his view of
_F>«eport'jLfuture, Jamul, who
was the architect tor Liberty
Park, lodcfid first for vacant land
next to arteries of transportation
that could attract outsiders and
Freeporteris. He • suggested a
"Mariner's MaH," a shopping
area with a nautical theme, to be
planned for the 20 acres in
Bennington Park, which have
already t>een cleared, and the 20
acres rf Firemai's Field. The

the site. Presently they have a 24

they have just completed one of
46 imlts iii Babylon.
Pfefer's memorandum to the
Board-stated that the construction
would have no adverse
effect on the operation of the
Village other than in garbage
removal which would pose no
problem. ".
The apartments would all be
one bedro<Kn-uhita. There would
be i}oat slips, the exact number of
whicli have.not yet been
presented, and 50 automobile
.parking spaces. At present,
according to Roy. Cacciatore, Jr.
who represented the land owners
before the Board of Trustees, the
projected purchase .price of the
individual units would be in the
$35,000 range. He also told THE
LEADER that if this proposal
is successful, there are othef
areas in the same vicinity that
could be treated in a like manner.
At the December public
hearing, there was only, one
objectipn to the proposal. The
Atlantic South C^vic Association
spoke in' favor of the condominiums,
with a few reser-'
vations particularly In the matter
of Village services, which led the •
Trustees to ask Prefer for his
determlnatioti." The'Freeport'
Chamber of (Commerce was also
in favor of the plan.
Detailed plans of the proposal
must now be '• submitted to the
-Village's 3i^lding: Department.
