FREEPORT- Village Historian
Qinton Mctz's book. "Freeport
As ItrWas." will be offered for
sale for the first time this Saturday,
November 13. The pabiica-tion,
which reviews three centuries
of the Village's past, will be
sold at the Bicentennial Com-and
gave the maintenance of the
liarks to Public Works, under its
Superintendent Ed Prefer.
Although Trustee Wayne Jor-'
dan called Prefer a "super star,
among Village, employees,"
rhe argued against the move, explaining
. that he wanted more
evaluation. of - the finandal im-pjici&
tions first. 3ordan pointed
ont.that'both Breknc and. Prefer
- had indicated Uiat they • were
.; "riot anxious!* to have the change
take placej* Prefer later told THE .
f.tEM)ER.tlu* be only hoped that':
• he ~<^uld handle "the'.work load

' ment at his disposal,'but he would '

Brekne was not at the meeting, .
~ aft. opch voting session of the
Board, but told THE LEADER
: the 'next jnomlng that, he had
; "no comment" on the change.
"1 work for.the Board;" he said,'
, "and I address ihy comments to .
them.",He did state, however,,
that he was against Uie change •
land had' also been opposed;to'
.the removal of .the parks from his.
jurisdication..
In his comments, Jordan
suggested that the details of any
changes should be Well worked
out before the changes a^re
madd noting tha^ both Superintendents
were instrurted by
the' Boad's motion tp meet and
work out the specifics later.
.' Both at Monday night's meeting
arid on Tuesday, in conversation
with THE LEADER,
Jordan charged th« the reasons
for the change were "too skimpy...!
think y ou should give the
real reasons," he told the Board.
He suggested that if the reasons
were economical, the Board
should consider a proposal-sug-,
gested by Roger Marks, at the
Aimual Budget Meeting, to consolidate
all custodial personnel.
Jordan ' told . THE LEADER
that be was "trying to get Mayor
White to be more specific."
He saldnhat he was opposed to
"trying to drive Brekne out by
chipping away at his position,"
"1 have no reason to want to
fire "him," Jordan stated. "He
is not the most brilliant administrator,
I am sure, but in terms of
the'xecreation program, he is doing
a good job."
Jordan charged that two mem-

were, members when Brekne
was hired and when the Recreation
Center ideas was conceived-
"Now they are seeing the Center
is too much financially "and are
blaming Brekne." he said.
"Bring Brekne up on charges."
Jordan ttcommcnded, stating
that he recommended a disciplin'
ary hearing right now to "dear
the air."..
"I think he would be deared in
such a hearing," Jordan stated,
adding that he felt White was .-
'-'weak and ihdedsive" in his
-handling of the inatter. - -
< ; White'sVl«>r--. •'
. Mayor. :White .'explained at
. ^Monday.. night's •: ineeting „that.
PreTef had said he 'could handle .
the -'a(|ded responsibilities. It -
.would be. worse, -White said,
to make such a change in March
whcn_ the Superintendent in
charge of the Center'would be
operating • under a.. budget prepared
by another person.
Jjiter White told this newspaper
that the move was not just
for economy. "Actually," he said
"I had a basic dissatisfaction
with mechanical mabenance at
the Recreation Center Jot well
ovefayear, and It hasn't been resolved."
VHilte explained' that
he believed that Prefer had both
the personnel aiid expertise
in his department to handle the
problems. . . C"
When asked if he would agree
with Jordan on the question oV
having a-disdjpliiiaiy hearing at
this time, ' White answered,
"1 have no comment at this
time/l .' . —1^— ..
In explaining ^he majority's
position. Trustee Dorothy Storm
said that Brekne had been notifi-ied
at least a year before that the
Board was concerned about problems
in the maintenance of the
Recreation Center. Although he
!*had ideas." she stated, "he
never did anything about it."
She mentioned that he recommended
dismissal of an employee
and his replacement; by another
which, she said, "according to
what I had found out would^have
a dbasterous result;" Storm'also
explained that there hadT)een an
Inventoty problem"and that there
was need for spedal consultants
in areas in which Brekne was not
familiar (such as heating and
air conditioning), which would
cost the tax—payers, additional
money. "We should not waste
any more of the tax payers'
money," she.said, "by keeping
- the Recreation Center under
. Drckne^
Storm also dted how overtime
charges in the Parks Department
had been substantially decreased
