FREEPORT - Mayor. William White explained this wedc thattbe
YiOage'of Freeport is wuting to go to trial to prevent the Assodatka
.for the Help of Retarded Children from using a Cedar Streetboose
as a hostel for mentaDy retarded women.
Claiming'that tlie settlement in Freeport of anpther-nqn-tax pro-udng
hostel would, be an "un-suggested

prove that impelling parents to
fay a fee was in \dolati<m of tha

reason: for attempting to
prevent.: the - Nassau County
organlzai^on from moving eight'
mentally retarded females and
a couple who win serve as house-,,
mother and fother into.the two-story,
one.family dwelling fadng

whidi-nsed to be owned by a dentist
and is surrounded by similar
homes, is not zoned for,s nxMning -

White took exception to
published remarks; made . by
AHRC spokespersons in a daOy
newspaper that . the . Village
had shown them only nmdown
. and decrepit dwellings for ,the
hostel. At least three or.four
were rooming houses and apartment
houses within a few blocks .
from the site they have dioscn.
White explained, adding that
they are "very nice" and would
have the advantage of possess-
- ing a non-confbnmng use. He'
said the hostel would have to go
'~ into proper zoning. "They argued'
feat it is Eke a family," White
said, "but the average family
doesn't consist of ten people."
Frecjxart already is" the site
of an AHRC Shelter Workshop
and an AHRC hostel far mentally
retarded males located on Fine
Street. The Industrial . Park
located workslKJp would have
probably generated ,390,000
anhuaUy in taxes, according to
White, if it was being used as
the rest of the property in that
area. . .
Ptnnting out that AHRC planned
' 35 hostels county-wide,
> White su^^ed that Freeport
jiad'the.first»-now_ other areas,
should also be. the site of such
facilities. He mentioned the
remarkable results that are
achieved' in such facilities and
said the one presently in fteeport
liad proven to generate no
problems. His two. concerns,
be stated, were the location of
the proposed new hostel, in an
area not zoned for that use, and
the removal from the village's
tax roles of more property, adSng
to the burden on the taxpayers.
Caso Asks For
Popular Support
- FREEPORT - Asking his audience
to "translate the fact that
you support my action by letting
tlie supervisors know," County
Executive Ralph Caso came to
lunch in Freeport last week and
explained his side of the current
negotiations with the County
Police Department.
