Village Bbardlmeeting^ appears to center around the 9 pm public
meeting'segme'nt.-Fewer people turn oyt isit 7:30 pm to watch the
Board of TiTJStees as they Vote and discuss matters oh the agenda^
~ This past Monday.night,-the 3oard took action-on two ordinances
which had been "discussed at ~
previous sessions. A new street
' vending ordinance mandates,
stringent safety measures to t>e
. fonowed.by all'vehicles, such as
. Ice-cream-.' trucks, selling on
Village streets. The law is geared
to avoid .accidents to yixmg
people who run into the streets to -
.. make purchases or who follow .
such vehicles as they, drive
through village streets.
The second law raises the fine .
from $1 to $3 for violations of the
Village's Improjwr Parking law.
Vehicles must park within the
space marked and those that
park beyond the lines will be hit
with the larger fines.
.The Board agreed with Chief of

Contractors' Responsibility
At.great length, the trustees
discussed the situation raised by
, construction difficulties at Hose
Company No. 3. While agreeing
to pay additional charges, they
- - staled that -an investigation
would he made in this case, and
others, to attempt to ascertain if
_ any contractors wer^jresponsible
for the costs." Delays caused by
subcontractors, Oie Board explained,
can sometimes result in
increased costs in other areas of
the building and should be
collected from the party.
With regrets, the resi^tion of
Shirley Crittenden as a member
of the Village's Human Relations
Commission was accepted and
Deputy Mayor Ralph Franco,
acting, in the absence of Mayor
William White,- appointed her
husband, James.fo the_vacancy.
Based on the recommendations
of the Freeport Planning Board,
the Village Board voted to deny a
request for a public hearing for
rezoning of property on the
southeast comer of S. i Grove
Street and Howard Avenue, from
Residence "A" to Residence-
Apartment Several reasons were
given, including a total area that
would be too small, no through
access for emergency . or
sanitation, vehicles, difficulties
with electric utilities, and an
increase in traffic congestion in
the area of Woodcleft Avenue.'
The property is part of the Lind-

become aggravated when the
South Main Street Mall was
closed off to vehicular .traffic.'
; The petition, and a printed"
fiyer also distributed this week,
asked for OTB's location at
.Freeport Plaza West';where all
the businessmen in that area
"rtlghf -approve it' And have supported
it." Pointing (o the proximity of
LIRR and buses, to the site's two
entrances" and to its parking, the
petition states that .any other-place
in Freeport is "inferior by
comparison.'!
The vmter of.the petition, Stan
McCaffrey. j)Oints to the "good
restaurants, taverns- and a
nearby park" and claims that
any other choice would make
0TB "a suspect of a dark deed
(choice by political infiuence);"
Victor -Jceepb, of Bouloukas
Restaurant in that area,. was
chosen by his- -fellow
businesspeople as contact and he
told THE LEADER that he had
heard the rumor that 0TB would
locate in a store owned by "one of
the gentlemen on the committee
that has political infliiehce."

Preeport's power plants have
