Lewis Elected Chief
, FREEPORT. - Arthur W.
Lewis, of West E^d Avenue, was
elected Chief of the Freeport Fire
Department, In the Department's
elections last Thursday, April 8.
At the.same time,.Richard Van
Wicklin was named the Department's
First Deputy Chief;
Walter Monestere, Second
- Deputy Chief; and outgoing Chief
William Coniinps Sr., was
designated Second Battalion
Delegate. •
Lewis, whose father Kenneth L.
Lewis was the, chief of the
Freeport ' Fire Department in
1943-44. came to the Freeiwrt
diriment in February, 1953. In
• 1961-62 he was Captain of Hose
Company #3. Employed by
ULCO as a 'supervisor of fleet
vehicles. Lewis fe' married. He
and his,wife Elaine liave two
sons, Jay,and Arthur;.

FREEPORT — The Board of Trustees of the Village of Freeport
.unanimously approved an amendment to the Code of Ordinances
which grants a rate increase to Village "Taxi cab companies. The
proposal, first heard at a public meeting on Feb. 23,.was adopted
with-a few minor changes.

Effective March I, the increase
will be increased 10< for each fare
designated. Fares vary depending
upon the zone of pickup and
the tone of discharge, in accordance
with a rate zone map.
As of July 1, persons traveling to
and from the same location will
be charged the full rate for the

each extra passenger. Children
under ten years of age will ride

suggested at the public hearing.
All cabs must have a picture of :
the driver; and a card showing'
rates, the senior citizen discount,
the charge for packages and
extra passengers and age limits
of children who may ride free,
TWs must be displayed in the
passenger compartment. The
Police Department was directed
to inforiii the companies of the
law and to ienfprce it after 30
days. A complete rate card must
be available to the passenger
upon request. _..
The Board also directed that
receipts for fares - would be
available upon the passenger's
request.
Trustee Wayne Jordan at first
asked the Board to consider a

Parks and Recreation Stanley
Brekne to purohase a lawn
mower to better handle particular-
work around the (Center.
The money for the mower,
Brekne suggested, could come
from-funds sdved on landscaping
not to be. done; Trustee Dorothy
Storm disagreed saying, "I
cannot swallow a more than
eial-mower when-wg—
havecutoutso many programs."
The Board took the matter off the
agenda.

prepare waivers for the residents
of Arthur Street in preparation
for the raising of the road. He wais
