FREEPORT -On Friday,-December 5, Freeport became the first
village in Nassau County to'institute a program that will use local
taxi. cab drivers as auxiliary "eyes" of its police department.
Sponsored in cooperation with'the First National City Bank, which
has had a Freeport branch for the past 15 years, the Freeport
bank started in New York City in
1973. That program "now Involves
4,000 cabs, and 7,000 drivers
throughout the five .boroughs.
Under the Freeport program,
the drivers, of; Cannon Taxi
Company's fleet of 17 cars, which
cruise all parts of the Village 24 •
hours a day,' will use their cab
radios to alert their dispatcher
when spotting a crime , in
in New YorFCity, according to
a spokesman for the City Police
Department, the Patrol has been
highly successful, with, some
3,000 calls received last year.
Deputy Mayor Ralph Franco,
who coordinated • the project •

The leaflet, and the Councfl, is
the product of Freepoirter John
Marshall, who is himself an
apartment house dweller. A .
Freeport resident for 20 years
before his marriage, Marshall
and his wif e live in an apartmoit
house, on Smith Street, which he
says is "a beautiful building"^
with a "good landlord."
A graduate^ of St. John's
University Law School, and a
recent admission to the Bar,
Marshall, who.works for a.North
Main Street law firm, plans to
remain in Freeport as an
eventual homeowner.
