FREEPORT - Francis X. Metzgar, President of the Freeport
Police Benevolent Association, has announced that his membership
is demanding that the Freeport Police be merged with the Nassau
County Police Force "since the Mayor and the Board of Trustees
are either unable or unwilling to meet the wage and fringe benefits
standards of the larger County
department."
President Metzgar angrily
denounced the Village Fathers
for their inaction and
proclaimed, "Our men are up to
standard with the Nassau County
Police Force and, Indeed, with'
any police force. We face the
same, and even greater, dangera
and are under the same constant
pressure to produce. We are
surrounded by the County force,
and the crime rate m bur Village.
is one. of the highest In the
Country. Since our members
must meet these standards, the
Village must correspondingly
meet the same standards of equal
compensation and benefits."
The Freeport Police have been
working without a contract for
close to one year, and are
presently awaiting a fact finding
report, which the Village refuses
to accept as binding. Although it
has been a prolonged period of
time without an agreement, the
P.B.A, has not yet sanctioned any

"Wlenever this was suggested,
by any Freeport taxpayers in the
past, Officer Metzgar and other
PBA leaders made clear their
belief that the County could not
provide the same level of
protection to Freeporters as our
own Police Department," Mayor
White pointed out. "They said the
county would have less men
patrolling FreeporlQand residents
would not be able to count, on a
