Freeport Vanips in Rescue Atlempt
The dedication and training of
the'members of the Preetxirt. all-volunteer
Fire Department te not
reserved for the Village alone as
proved by meinbere Richard
Murray and GeoinS<s Dowdell last
Wednesday (June 20) when they
attempted to avert a tragedy that
took the lives of two little girls.
The two Freeport .men were in
the Roosevelt area about midnight
when they heard a fire
alarm. They rushed to the scene
at 209 Ellison Avenue where the

FPD Nab Burglars
Freeport Police Chief Anthony
Elar is pleased to report thai ib
has once again been proved that
the Village is not a iieplthy place
for burglars and gives full <yedit
to the ever-alert members-pf-hJs—
force for that unhealthy climate.
As an-example, Chief Elar
points out that at 12:42 earlylast
Thursday (June 21) morning,
Patrolman Hartmann, a
relatively new member of the
force, spotted a burglary in
^progressat.the D & W Country
Market at 3S9 North Main Street.
. Seeing the front "door broken and'
two men—Inside,---Hartmann
radioed for assistance. Joined by
Patrolmen Rhodes, Henrickson
and Parker, Charles Higgs, 18, oT
20 Albany Avenue and Benjamin
Rickie Brown, 16, of 34 Stevens
Street^ were arrested , arid
charged with 3rd degree
burglary. Brown was also
charged with possession of_
marijuana. Some $400 in merchandise
~ soda,.cigarettes, etc -
- was recovered.
Elar points out that burglars
often think the police tend to get
-drowsy towards the end of their
shift when others are asleep.
"Not true,"-he-saysTising-this
past Monday morning as an
example.^ftt 4:59am Patrolmen^
Pesale and Werner spotted
another..burglary in progress at-
Ray no Distributors, 350 North
Main Street." The man ran from
the store on foot,, and while the
policemen lost- him in the back.
yards, they had recognized him"
from a previous-interview. A
radio alert was soundedjnd First
Squad detectives picked up Ray
Williams, 25, of Roosevelt, and
charged him with the break in.

the Village of Frceijort is seekingl
to tie-in with tiie-Nassau County.
sewer syslen\.
Freeport Mayor William II.
While announced^Tuesday Ihat a"
tentative agreement had been
coached with County officials,
whigh would make it possible-for
(he Village^'sewage to be piped-_^
to the Couiity's^new-^Disposar
Plant at Wantagh. ""We are very
pleased to have the County look
favorably upon our request for
this tie-in," Mayor White said,
"because the cost for the Village
to construct an ocean outfall, as
"demanded by the environmentalists,
would be
completely beyond the..scope of
Village finances. It would cost
many millions of dollars."
Mayor White said, "Our.
engineers and consultants have
made exhaustive studies to
determine If there would be any
possible benefit In relalnlng-complete
control of' FreeportT
Sewage Disposal system, but it
was found thar.this would be
financially impossible."
The Mayor pointed out that the
Village cannot obtain any federal
or stale aid for a local project,
inasmuch as all Environmental
Protection Administration officials
have taken a regional
approach>on the basis of greater
efficiency and lower costs with
larger andfewer outfalls.
Such outside financial aid would.

In the agreement belween.
County and Village, Frecfwrt will--
own and mninlain its collection
system but will not be re.sp<mHiblo
for sewage treatment. The
collection system will feed into
the County system in Merrick
and wind up going through the
-Wantagh disposal ^plant and the
nciiiin ^outfair -two~alfil^half
miles off shore.
The County contemplates
building and operating a new
pumping station in^ Freeport,
with a connecting/orc'e-main, as
part of the required facilities.
"This joint venture with the
County makes gciod sense for
both County and Village tax-pay
era, ".May or White said. "The
engineers estimated that capital
costs for the Village to undertake
the necessary project, alone
would be about |6,000,000', to be
borne solely by Freeport Utx-
-payers-because no federal or
slate aid would IjeavailaWe to UH.
"On the other hand the
County's capital cost for the
additional Pacllilies will be about
$5,(m,mHK hul a mininium of eo%

federal and slate aid, Frecfwrt
will pay a proportionate share of
capital aoaUi and of operating
expenses t.o the County's .Sewage

"Therefore the Village will be
paying its fair share, but both the
Village and the County will have
