against. It was a light turnout with only 2.360 ballots cost.

Freeport was the scene, last
Sunday . of dedication and
ground-breaking ceremonies for
the new $2,250,000 structure for
the Community Mental Health
Center of The Luther E. Woodward
School for Emotionally
Disturbed Children. The Center
will have the responsibility for
mentally ill children, and. young
-adultsj^in the Southern Tier of
Nassau County and, as an affiliate
of the Comprehensive*
-Community—Mental—Health
Center at Nassau County Medical.
Center, will provide substantially
improved mental health services
to the'community.
The cerenionies were led by
Morton M. PoUak; Pr^ident of
the School's Board of Directors,,

Rand called to announce that on
the fourth anniversary of the
founding of the Concerned
Parents of Freeport, an
organization behind which Rand
was a driving fdrce, he had
decided to run for the one seat up
for election in the June School
Board voting. The seat has been
held for-the past three years by
S.L, (Larry) Yanover who with
"John Mendes represehts the
conservative element of the five-man
Board.
Rand, who lost by 700 vot€fs to
Joseph McAhdrews in the Board
elections two years ago and was
unofficial campaign manager in
Chris Sprowal's unsucces^ul bid
to become. the Village's first
black trustee in March, told THE
LEADER his platform would
dwell oh the need for county and.
state funds to meet' the -spedil-educalional
nee(Js of the poor and
disiSidvantaged youngsters
dwelling in Illegal housing in
Freeport.
Reached by THE LEADER,
Yanover stated he had not yet
' reached the decision to rerun for
his seat. Pointing out- that "the
Board was currently preparing
the School Budget and in the
midst of salary negotiations, he
stated that J "If I see
daylight, .^sonie trend that hpn-educational
items will be- cut
down for the benefit of the taxpayer,
I will run again. If not I
may decide to devote the time I
spend on'school affairs to other
areas of public service."'

So far, the voluntary contributions
have totaled almost
$450,000 with the ultimate goal of
$750,000. Involved in grant funds
are the National Institute of
Mental Hpalth and the Office of
Vocational Rehabilitation, both
of the Federal Department-iof
Health Education and Welfare;
the NeW-York..State-Departniejil
of Mental Hygiene; the New-Yor
.State Department of Education,
Office of Vocational
Rehabilitation; and the New
York State Housing Finance
Agency providing loan funds.
The concept-^-ofi: the Comprehensive
Community .Menla
Health Center was designed to
provide services that would treat
the mentally ill in the local
community as contrasted with
the former practices' of sending
the patient put of the area to State
Mental Hospitals. The coordination
and continuity of care,
plus accessible and immediately-available
services are the basic
; purpose of this new thrust for the
care or mental; illness./

transported by the Freeport Fire
Department Emergency Company,
Monclay to Doctors
Hospital- for treatment of a head
contusion after being hit by a
vehicle,
Paul D'Agostino of 2(» South
Bay view Avenue, was driving a
school station wagon, owned by
Solar Transportation, eastbound
on Grand Avenue When the child
came running out from, the north
side of the street some 25 feet east
of Rosedale Avenue. The
Freeport Police report states
some 20 feet of skid marks were.
visible.
In another accident Thomas
FranhJIn. 50; of West Hempsleod
and Juan Palala,.32, of 289 South
Bayview Avenue, were taken to
Doctors Hospital with a head
injury and chest pains respectively.
Both cars were lowed,
away.
The accident occurred .shortly
after lb pm Sunday at the in-terseclioh
of Atlantic Avenue and
South Grove Street, Franklin was
southbound on Grove and Palala
eastbound on Atlantic- when the'
collision occurred. It is not known
at present whether either car-jumped
the traffic signal.
