meeting after 12 years of such^
every.-flrst and third Monday
gatherings and hundreds of
special hearings. Mayor Robert
Sweeney had a unique effect.on at
least the females in attendance -
they cried.
Having faced everything from ..
wall-to-wall angry crowds to a
handful of a faithful few, the
latter was the case Monday when
he gaveled the five minute
meeting to order. The absence of
so many that supported him

thatit was Election Day eve and
Village Party,members were out
drumming up support for the
group's slate --• a group now
headed by Sweeney.
—Although by now a veterffn-of
farewell, testimonials and
salutes, Sweeney was not uh>
moved by the finality of the occasion.
He slipped several times
during his longtime ritiial, "We
move that we adjourn as a Board
of... and reconvene as a Board of

Before he gaveled the hearing
to an end, Sweeney did make note
of the occasion saying, "I want to
thank every person'in Freeport_
for affording me the opportunity

•years.' I want, to thank my wife
and family for their patience and
understanding. I thank those,
including Jim Fortuhalo, who
were at- my first Board meeting

Adjourning 'the meeting,
Sweeney went to his embrace his
weeping wife as Trustee Fairrr
berg said, ''We give him back to

" In fairly light voting Tuesday,- Village Party candidates,
William White j o r Mayor. Ralph Franco and Berkley Swe-zey
for Trustees and Edwin Freedman for Village Justice,
were Swept into office, gaining 47% of the 8,000 votes
cast. Some 20,000 Freeporter^ were eligible to vote.
/ Reached by THE'LEADER one hour after the polls
closed with early returns strongly indicating what was to
BelRe"financsilt, Frecport's new Mayor was clearly tired
but jubilant. Above the noise of his cheering supporters,
he said, "I think this election-ofjnyself and my running
mates is a justification, for the present-Administration. I
think we have proved that the Freeport voter can't befocjl-ed^

The VP Trustee candidates headed that rade with Berkley
Swezey getting 3,449 and Ralph Franco 3,426. Next score-maker
was Harry Chuisano with 2,355, 1,377 on the Su-.
burban ticket and 978 on his independent line. Action
Party candidate Carroll Belt was close with,2,177. Incumbent,
candidate Lloyd Orr drew 2,177, 1,338 on the
Suburban ticket and 839 on the Independent line. The
Action Party's Terence McNally was next with 2,036, Low
man was Chris Sprowal with 700, 47^ irjom United Free-port
ancl 221 from Black Convention '73.
Biggest winner of all "was Edward Freedman, returned
to his post of Village Justice by 5,013 votes. The Village
Party line got him 3,530, the Action Party 2,283. His
contender, George Maislen got 2,224^ 1,370 front the
Suburban Pwty and 854 on the independent line.
