Mrs. Merry Christmas:
Mrs. Connie Briel of 62 Casino
Street, a 5 foot. 8 inch, 130 pound,
blonde and dark brown-eyed 28-
vear-old housewife, won the title
of Mrs. Merry Christmas 1972
over four other finalists at the
competition held last Thursday at
the Freeport Oiamber of Commerce
Champa^e luncheon at
the Elks Club.
The new Mrs. Merry Christmas
is the wife of Hubert Briel, a New
York City plainclothesman and
the mother, o.f four-year-old
Robert Jr., Born in Brooklyn and
raised in various sections of
Queens, Mfs. Briel is a graduate
of Andrew Jackson High School
in Rosedale and her parents now
reside in Valley Stream. The
Briels moved to Freeport four
years ago. Because, BSrs. Briel
told THE LEADER,."r always
itought it was an exciting town.
We've always loved the water
and the boats and irften came out
to go claniming."
Since joining the Freeport

very active wit& ttie Commimity

Chorale, serving as Social
Director, and will appear in the
group's February production of
"Bells Are Ringing." With
Robert Jr. enrolled in the Giant
Step Nursery School, she has
engaged in various pAHcity
activities for the school. Dabbing
in oil painting, her overwhelming
hobby is sewing with the dresses
she wore at both the contest's
semi-finals and finals being of
her own creation.
Mrs. Briel looks forward to
working with the Freeport
Chamber of Commerce in the
vear ahead, saying "they're
lovely people." A winner of a
multitude of prizes donated by
the Chamber, her biggest
moment of '•glamour" will.come
when she rides the Mrs; Merry
Christmas Float in Freeport's
Annual Toyland Parade, Nov. 25.
First runner-up iii the contest
was Mrs. Hedy Edwards with the
second place going to^rs. Jean
DuPont, both of whom received
trophies. Third and'fourth place
winners. Rosemary Jeffries and
Maureen Kraemer, respectively,
received Christmas charms.
Over 8» pei^ons attended the
contest finals which had been
chaired by John Abtjate.
This Saturday will be a big day for Freeporters of all
; ages with the VfllageV 15 th Anilual Toyland Parade wind-
King its way tlirough our street in the morning and our
South Shore Division II football champs, the Red Devils,
-meeting the North Shore champs from Bethpage at Hofstra
Stadium in the afternoon to battle for the county-wide
S;title.
Kicking off at 9:30 a.m. from Fieeport High. School.

dignitaries riding in the parade include Nassau County
Executive Ralph Caso, Congressman Norman Lent, State
Senator Norman Levy, Hempstead Presiding Supervisor
Alphonse D'Amato and Assemblyman-elect Armaiid
D'Amato. Local officials will include Mayor Robert
Sweeney and the Board of Trustees, the School Board and
Superintendent of Schools, and the Fire Department Chiefs
and ex-Chiefs. Parade Governor is Bill Sabella, Freeport's
First Lady. Mrs. Martha Sweeney, will act as Mistress of
Ceremonies at the Main Street Reviewing Stand while Al
Case of WGBB will broadcast live from the parade.
Highlit ts of the event will include the appearance of
die Mrs. Merry Christmas Float carrying Mrs. Connie
Briel, tins year's title holder; Ronald McDonald and his
Trainburger, and, of course . . . . Santa Claus himself.
Raindate for the parade is Dec. 2.
