The Village of Freeport could receive an estimated $374,543 in federal
monies each year for the next five under a federal State and Local Assistance
Act. throu^ a bill which has been approved by the House Ways and
Means Committee and is eiqpected to be brought before the full House of
Representatives shortly.
According to ar statement
issued by Governor RockefeUer.
House Ways and Means Committee
Chairman Wilbur Milts
(the bill's sponsor) and State
legislators Earl W. Brydges,
Perry B. Duryea, Joseph
Iferetski and Stanley Steingut.
the: bill would be retroactive to
January I of this year and of the
41 members of the House from
New YorkC 38 have agreed to
support the bill.
Under Uie proposed legislation,
the 37 incorporated areas of
Nassau iCpunty would receive an
estimated $154 million annual
total while the county itself would
receive $17 million. Disbursed
almost solely on population.
Valley Stream and Hempstrad.
close to Freeport in number of
residents, would receive $378,619
and $380,985. respectively. While
the funds would be channeled
through the State, the usage
would not te mandated by either
the state or federal governments.
Asked by the LEADpIR to
comment on the possible windfall,
a Village spokesman first
pointed out that It would have no
effect on the jtut-announced joint
law suit being brought by both the
Villages of Freeport and Valley
Stream against the State to
equalize aid given to communities.
He further stated that,
in his'opinion, ther6 would be no
lowering of municipal taxes hut
the federal monie^ could be
"banked" against any futiLire
raise. School taxes would not be
affected.
Should the Mills Bill be approved,
with the January I
retroactive dale. Freeport.
whose fiscal year ended in
February, could expect its first
$^4,543 shortly thereafter.
