"I'll teli you something I haven't even told the board,"
said Mayor Sweeney, "I'm appalled at the thought of
apartments on North Main Street, but I have searched my
soul and have not been able to come up with a satisfactory
alternative." So spoke the proponent of the Dunne Report
Friday evening in the Village Hall before 45 interested
citizens of Freeport. Sweeney had listened for an hour and
forty five minutes while most of those present (the majority
in favor of the plan) spoke their piece. His statement
surprised most present who have followed the controversial

a Planned Unir Development zone permitting apartment
houses of up to six stories in height, plus supporting commercial
uses, such as offices, medical and dental clinics,
hotels and motels, and neighborhood shops.
Mayor Sweeney said of the proposed rezoning. The
present busin«js zoning has not served to spur improvements
in the area. There are also many non-conforming
uses such as wooden-frame multiple dwellings, gas stations
and auto-body repair shops. They were built before
the present zoning laws came into effect, so we can't

Village Starts Educational Program
on Drug Addiction
The Village of Freeport is
starting an educational program
on drug addiction, for all its
employees, Mayor Robert J.
Sweeney has announced.
"Our Narcotics Guidance
Director, Jaddie Stewart is
setting up training sessions for
Village employees," Mayor
Sweeney said, "so that our people
will acquire some practical
knowledge of the problems of
drug addiction. The more individuals
we have in the Village
who have an understanding of the
problems, the greater will be our
ability to ameliorate the effects
on our community."
Jaddie Stewart is a full-time
employee of the Village of
Freeport, as Narcotics Guidance
Council Director,
Mayor Sweeney points ait,
"We don't have any greater
problem than other communities,
but the difference is that we are
taking direct action to inform and
educate Freeporters as a
preventive measure. This Village
employees' program is one more
facet of the over-all effort by the
Narcotics Guidance Council and
Director Jaddie Stewart. '
The employee sessions will be
given for two hours a week over
several weeks time, so that they
will not unduly affect the
operation of any municipal
department. In addition to Mr,
Stewart, instructors will be Dr.
John A. Gilchrist and Dr. Em-mett
Campbell MD.s. and registered
nurses Regina Landers
and Gwen Alexis. Dr. Gilchrist
is affdiated with HlUcrest General
Hospital and Harlem Hospital.
He is also a consultant on narcotics
to the Queens County
District Attorney's offlce and the
Freeport Narcotics Guidance
Council
Dr. Campbell is on the staff of
Mercy Hospital and the Nassau
County Medical Center. He is on
the Executive Board of the
Freeport Council. Mrs. Landers
is also on the Executive Board of
the Council, as is Mrs. Alejcis,
who is employed by Nassau
County Department of Health.
Mr. Stewart noted that training
sessions similar to the one being
given to Village employees are
available to members of
Freeport organizations at no
charge. They may be held in the
evenings or at times mutuaUy
convenient for the Narcotics
Guidance Council and the
organizations. He asked tliat any
