Freeporters vs. Blockbusting
Several Freeporters indudii^
Ray Lavalee, code enforcer fw
the village, visited Secr^ary of
State John Loinenzo, last Wednesday
in his otTice at 270
Broadway, New York City. The
meeting had been arranged by
State Senator Norman Levy to
discuss the problem of blockbusting
in various areas of
Freeport.
Sy Kom, spokesman for the
group referring to "blockbusting"
tactics of »)me realtors
said, "the same type of
dangerous situation that existed
in the Northwest (of Freeport)
now exists in the South, in ord«"
to buy time, a blanket cease and
desist order should put the entire
village of Freeport "off limits"
for solicitations from brokers."
Jack Muratori, assistant to
Lomenzo, answering Korn's
request, stated," Cease and
desist orders are now in effect for
800 petitioners in the Freeport
area. Blanket orders have been
challenged in the courts when
used in unusual circumstances."
Lomenzo, cwnmenting further
<m the problem stated, "Senator
Levy has been a refreshing
breeze in the Freeport sibiation.
TTiere are professional blockbusters
and we know it. How can
we help the innocent while
punishing the guilty? Blockbusting
is a milliim dollar racket
and quite a few firms are guity of
, it." Lomenzo iofwined those
present that Governor
RxK^efeDer had p-anted |5O,O00
in special funds to enable the
Secretary of State's office to
maiataia a task force in
Freqport. He said, while blockbusting
is difficult to prove, there
will be charges of mortgage
almse made pubUc during the
next few wedcs. The abuses were
uncov«vd by Lomenzo's task
force and will involve some local
real estate operators.

At a meeting Monday afternoon in Sunrise Masonic Hall,
over 200 members of the Freeport Teachers Association
v o t ^ overwhelmingly to give the executive committee of
the association the power to strike, if needed, during their
efforts to negotiate a new contract with the school system.
The Association has approximately 400 members and is
headed by John McKaharay, a teacher at Dodd Jr. High.
Mr. McKahary told the LEADER that the action was
taken because members of the Association are not
satisfied with the progress of the negotiations and that he
personally felt that "true collective bargaining had not
taken place."
Freeport is one of about 20 school districts on Long
Island which has not signed a contract with their teachers.
One point which is shaping up as a major issue in the negotiations,
is a voice, by t h i tochers, in the cofricuhimTof
the school system. "We would like to see a committee of
students, teachers and administrators consiiltaj before any
curriculum changes.^' The Association president continued,
'^Freeport teachers are asking for no more than has been
received by other school districts."
School Superintendent Donald Costlow stated that the
school board is awaiting the report of an appointed fact-^
finder, Jonas Silver, whose illness and hospitalization has
delayed his findinp. Mr. Silver is expected to return the
first week in October and complete his report which will
then be presented to the board. Mr. McKaharay contends
that the presence of school board members at past
negotiation sessions could have resolved preliminary work
and issues. The board has been represented at the negotiations
by Irving Walt, counsel for the school system.
