Teachers Return to
No Pay Hike
FREEPORT BEAUTY WINS CONTEST: On the road to the Mia America tiHe is JBi Crook, age 6.
of 643 South Long Beach Avenue, Freeport.
J3I won the Miss Merrick Road Park contest August 20th. She is receiving the con^^tulations of
Francis l^rc^l. Presiding Supwvisor of the Town of Hempstead.
The Office of Emergency Preparedness <OEPK notified
the Leader, Tues. afternoon, that "in aU probability a letter
is in the mail informing the Freeporl School District that
there will be no wage increase at least until Nov. 15th for
teachers in the Freeporl District.''
The information was supplied as a result of a Leader
inquiry following a decision from the President's Cost of
Living Council which ruled out a pay increase for teachers
in the Hempstead School District. On Aug. 30th, the
Council decided that school districts where contracts were
not signed by August 15th cannot raise teachers pay during
the 90 day wage freeze recently instituted by President
Nixon. The Hempstead Schools are one of about 40
districts on Long Island where conh^acts were not signed
by Aug. ISth. Freeport is also included in this number.
When contacted, a spokesman for the Freeport District
said that they expected the Hempstead decision would
apply to Freeporl teachers also but that a written request
for a ruling had been made to the Office of Emergency
Preparedness. The OEP has been established locally to
disseminate information concerning die 90 day h^ze
on wages and prices. The OEP spokesman said that all 40
districts with unsi^ied contracts •would be guided by
the same filling.
