The latesC steps to halt
"blockbusting" in Freeport
took place Monday night
when the Village Board
authorized Freeport officials
to move on their own against
blockbusters instead of relying
on NY. State for
protection.
A local ordinance prohibiting
anyone from referring
to ethnic, racial or
rcUgious neighborhood situations
in order to encourage
real estate transactions was
unanimously passed by the
board. They also passed an
ordinance forbidding the use
of "For Sale" signs on home?>
or apartments in order to
prevent a chain reaction of
home sales. Violations are
punishable by ISO days in
jail and a $250 fine. Mayor
Sweeney said that the Free-port
ordinances were patterned
after ones used in
other communities where
the state laws have proved
unsatisfactory. Wilbur Lew,
chairman of the Long Island
Board of Realtors with 900
memberships approved of
the passage of the Freeport
ordinances. "We have found
in other towns," said Lew,
"that enforcement of the
state law is not as we would
like it." The state law prohibiting
blockbusting applies
only to licensed real estate
brokers while the Freeport
ordinance covets any person
who exploits racial fears to
force a home sale.
Hie iww bws are the
latest attempt to halt blockbusting
in Freeport which
has aroused tte ire of many
residents and resulted in a
personal appearance by N.Y.
