Joseph McAndrews, the school board incumbent, defeated
Jomer Rand, and the Reverend S. Frank Emmanuel
won over Joan M. Young in the school board elections
Tuesday evening.
In a "gloves o f f campaign. Rand had tried to unseat
McAndrews who had been a board member for 5 years.
Reverend Emmanuel and Mrs. Young were battling it
out for the board seat vacated by Thomas O. Moore.
The final totals showed Rand with 2093 votes and
McAndrews with 2704. Young accounted for 2300 votes
while Emmanuel piled up 2557.
The school budget also pa^ed by 2432 to 2131 and
the Library support was also OK'd 2738 to 1796. The
third proposition which would have raised the minimum
distance for busing high school students from one and a
half mile to two miles was defeated 2212 to 2263.
Both terms for the newly elected board members are
for 3 years. The $12,188,527 school budget includes a
reduction of 12«/4 staff positions. The $394,823 library
budget would raise the library tax rate from 45 cents to
48 cents for each $100 of assessed valuation.

Freeport Citizens Committee
Agency (part of the YMithful
Drug Abuse Pn^ram) provides
for out-reach, individual and
group counseling, "rap
sessions", referral and
preventive serviMS, has re<»ived
180.000 for fiscal year 71-72.
Freeport BOC program dealing
with individual and group
counseling complimented by
referral and hot-Une services,
has been furled by NACC in the
amount of SS8.U7 tor fiscal 71-72.
Luther E. Woodward Schod, an
education, prevention and
rehabilitation service for
emotionally distiuiieddrug-using
youth, will receive $60,000.
South Shire Child Guidance
Centre, an ambulatory program
encompassing family and youth
counseling, will receive 124.000.
