Go Underground
FREEPORT PHONE EXPANSION — New York Telephone is removing some three miles of Freeport
aerial phone cable that will be replaced by underground lines as part of company's service improvement
and beautffication program. Three new cable routes out of 120 S. Grove Street central office will add
over 5% miles of new underground cable to area when completed this summer. The expansion keeps
pace with growing telephone needs of about 43,000 customers in Freeport, Baldwin, Roosevelt, North
Merrick and Merrick.

It's part of one of the biggest cable projects undertaken
by New York Telephone in Nas.sau, and as a result phone
service as well as local scenery will be improved.
"When the project is completed this summer," «iid
Jack Malone, Freeport commercial manager, "over S'/z
miles of new cable will add to our ability lo speed local
calls and help get customers' new phones in and working
faster."
The expansion keeps pace with the growing telephone
needs of the 43.000 customers in Freeport, Baldwin.
Roosevelt. North Merrick and Merrick who are served on
the 378, 379, 223, 623. 546 and 868 exchanges.
One of the new cable routes will run south along Grove
Street, another northeast along Broadway, and the third
northwest along Long Beach Avenue toward Hempstead.
Most of the three miles of cable going underground Ls
along Milburn Avenue south of Merrick in Baldwin. Overhead
cable along Seaman Avenue in Freeport and Bedford
Avenue will also go below ground.
Also this summer, workmen will put the Tinishing
touches on a three-story addition to the Freeport central
office. When new-call handling equipment is cutover early
next year, overall capacity will increase by 2,300 to
50,800 phones, meaning faster dial tone and generally
improved calling.

More than 500 people attended^ the Freeport Chamber of Commerce Installation
Dinner Dance at Carl HoppFs Malibu Sunday evening. Many County and Freeport
VIPs were in attendance as outgoing president Michael Kemp passed the gavel to the
Honorable Charles C. Mehrmann who will preside over the Chamber for the next 12 months.
County Executive Ralph G. Caso was the guest speaker and Hempstead Presiding
Supervisor Francis T. Purcell swore in the new officers. Bernard N, Ames, head of
Columbian Bronze, Freeport, received the Chamber's Man of the Year Award.
Credit for the huge success of the gala affair goes to Chairman C. William Gaylor
who headed and coordinated joint efforts by various committees and the Ladies
Auxiliary of the Chamber,

for the evening and guest
speakers included Robert J.
Sweeney, Mayor of Freeport;
Neal Moylan, Commissioner of
New York Slate Department of
Commerce and Julius L. Mintz,
Commissioner of New York State
Job Development Authority.
