Nassau County Executive Ralph G. Caso has announced
that the Nassau Drug Abuse and Addiction Commission
has received a $145,771 federal grant for out-patient drug
programs in Hempstead, Freeport and Roosevelt.
The fund.s will come from the Department of Justice's
Law Enforcement As.sistancc Administration.
The programs, to l>e run by the community and agency
liaison unit of the county's drug commissitm, will consist
of education, prevention and Ireatmenl.
Tlie grant application was prepared with the assistance
of local organizalion.s involved in the fight against drug
abuse. It will be used to establish a drug treatment center
in Hempstead and to hire workers to seek out heavy drug
users for treatment and counseling.
The Nassau County Drug Abuse and Addiction Com-mi.
ssion will run the program. John Fallon, the administrator
of the commission, said thai funds were being
sought 'frcmi another source" for traveling methadone
detoxification unit to reach drug users isolated from de
toxificalion program.
Fallon said thai the program which is the first aimed
specifically at the poor, would emphasize treatment at
the community level through group programs, counseling
and other services. He estimated that the treatment part
of the program could serve about 500 persons. Involved
in the program will be the Roosevelt Community Council,
the Roosevelt Economic Opportunity Commission, the
Freeport Community Drug Council and the HemfKtead
Community Service Center. Fallon could not say yesterday
when the program would start.

Purcell Wants Low Leod Gas
In a move to help curtail air
pollution. Hempstead Town
Presiding Supervisor Francis T
Purcell has announced the
adoption of a new town ordinance
requiring all gasoline stations in
the town to sell low lead gasoline.
The new law, which was the
subject of a public hearing on
Tuesday, requires that owners
and lessors of gas stations in the
town must offer low lead gasoline
for sale, on or before January !,
1972.
Purcell noted that "we have
reached the point where positive
action must be taken to reverse a
process which substantially
contributes to our air pollution
problem today "
The law classifies low lead
gasoline as "a flammable liquid
containing one-half gram of lead,
or less per gallon."
It also covers the construction
of new stations and points out
that applications for construction
of new stations will be screened
by the town to determine that all
the provisions of the new ordinance
be met before permits
are granted.
Penalty provisions for the new
ordinance call for a fine of not
more than $500. or imprisonment
for a period not exceeding six
months, or both.

demands for strict housing code

busting by local realtors and a
general improvement of the
image of Freeport.
Village to Announce
Appointments
The annual organization
meeting of the Freeport Village
Board will be held on Monday,
April 5, at 8:00 PM. This is the
yearly meeting at which the
Village Board announces all
appointments for expiring
positions, including staff
members. Boards, Commissions,
and Committees.
Although public meetings of the
Village Board are generally held
at 9:00 PM. the Ume for this
meeUng is set by law at 8:00 PM.
There is no regular meeting that
night, and no public participation.
