Freeport's H i ^ School
has been wracked with violence
and disorder practically
every .school day since
Thursday, March 4th.
Nine students and a teacher
were injured on that day during
a melee that involved 50 to 100
students in the cafeteria. One 15
year old txty suffered 22 stitches
to close a knife wound in his
rmck. Police restored a s&nblan(X
of peace and the high school was
closed at noon.
School opened Friday with
Village police posted inside and
outside the building. About 200
of the school's black students
boycotted the opening claiming
they were not being adequately
protected in the schools. While
schttol offidais' expressed the
opinion that they would like to
see more parents take an interest
in school problems, village
spokesman and civic leaders
were inclined to Uame the dis-ord&
s on a small group of black
and white students who are
troublerrmkers.
The weekend brought a series
of meetings and dixussions by
the school bfmrd and private
groups but violence continued
on Monday when a bomb scare
caused the building to be emptied
at 12:45 PM. As hundreiis
of students gathered in front of
the school, scuffling broke out
and all police units were cSs-patchedm
the scene. An attempt
was made by police and school
offidais to separate blacks and
whites. They suojeeded in gathering
most blade students in the
lobby while rf»e vidtites continued
to mill around in front of
the building. A dedsion was
made to bus the black sttid&its
to thdr homes but sever^J stones
were thrown presumably by
white stt/dents and at Sunrise
mtd Brooksiefo Aves., most black
students left the buses and walk
ed east, some along the railroad
tracks.
Wtite students alw made
their way east through the village
de^ite efforts by pofice
to dispose them. Several arrests
were matte in im^ated cases
vnhere students refused to tBs-band.
The police reported that
assorted weapmts, Mdcs, pipe,
and imitation rifles were t^eo
from students in the violence
that followed the t^^oned
bomb thwat Five permms werm
aerated and five r^wtsd in/umd
as a re^lt of Monday's disorders.
