The purpoae of the transportation
service la to make it..po3-.|
nible to treat pailonw such as arthritis
sufferers on an outpatient
basis, thus freeing valuable hospital
bed space, and to make it
possible tor those living at homne
who.arc confined to wheel chairs
to receive phyiilcal therapy treatments
In the hospital. The transporting
of patients to and from
the hospital Is accomplished in
vehicles called "ambukttes,"
The program has been spearheaded
by Milton Holtzman,
M,D., Director of the Department
of Rehabilitation Medicine at
South Nassau. Dr. Holtzman
whoso medical specialty is re-habilltatkin
medicine, jjelt that
the traniqjortalion service would
provide-Bineam of freeing hospital
beds and allowing patietils
to go home earlier, but still re-ceivc
the treatment they need.
He also felt that the home-bound
patient would be able to get to
the hospital for the physical
therapy iroattnents.
