..'*Tbe Leader is not going to lie a crusading,
muckraking or political publication, but it is goipg to
print the news withmit fear or favor and call a spade a
spade when necessary. In the mmA of a controversy,
each side will receive equal consideration in the news,
columns, and only in the editorials will sidefrbe taken.
. .Our only aim is to enhance the welfare of the village
by printing aU the helpful news we can get and also to
promote communis spirit.'*
. .These words appeared in the editorial column of the
Leader on May 15th. IMl. the first «|poii of tiie new
Leader. This paper had first seen the U ^ t of | | p | | t l$3ii:^C
and functioned, fi^ 5 years as a weekly,' devoted>-
primarily to legal advertisements. The new editor.
George W. Goelier. wrote tai his first editorial. "Hie
Leader invites every person in Freeport to help make
this a live, newsy, paper giving every week a cross-sectimi
of onr community life... we want every item that
Is of interest to any Freeporter."
. .Iliese words, written almost 30 years ago, accurately
reflect the thinking of the new proud owners of the
Leader, Norma and Bill Braun. It is their strong desire
to fill Freeport's need for continuing a good paper that
refuses to become an arena for criticism, vilification, or
condemnation. Rather than force their belief on others
the editors hope to be able to present all the news and
facts that will make Freeporters aware of their
blessings as well as their problems, aware of the lighter
and happier side of everyday living that seems to have
eluded so many of us in recent years.
. .Our responsibility to our readers wiU not permit us to
ignore issues because they are sad or ugly, but while we
weep for the dead let us also re|oice for the living. When
we grieve for the persecuted and oppressed let us also
be thankful for the free and unencumbered. Thm
unhappy side of life has always balanced man*s
existence, but depressing facts need not be sharpened
again and again and constantty thrust before us to
agitate and disturb, t h e L^der Intends to examine and
present aD ideas, facts. an# situations in perspective
and t i^ at aU times, with the help of our readers, to
publish a great paper without publishing a grate paper.
