ELKS TO HONOR
GEORGE M. LEVY
Caso & Murphy
Fight Water Issue
Hempstead To%vn Presiding
Sup1»rvisor Ralph G. Caso and
CounciJman George A. Murphy,
who have tione bottle for years
for better water service In the
water-short Merrick area, today
lauded the Public Service Com*
mission's decision to deny the
Utilities and Industries Corporation
an Incicase In water rates
for 38,'?00. •justoroers served by
the ".water supplier's . Merrick
Biofe..^--, ,...:,.;..«, ^ ..--:..
Both Caso and Murphy, appearing
at a series of recent public
hearings held by the PSC,
argued that the hike in rates was
not warranted by the quality of
service in the area. They stressed,
further, that water sales in
the district were limited solely
by the company's water distribution
limitations, pai'ticulurly during
peak hot weather periods,
rather than by any lack of consumer
demand. This point was
preswd as a major argument
against grar.ling a rate increase.
PSC Examiner Edward L,
Block found insufficient evidence
on, the part of the utility company
to justify a rate Increase
which would have amounted to
a total of $160,000 11 year. The
state agency ruled that the company
was already realising a
reasonable jrofit.
