MANGANO WELCOMES

Mistaken Oil Delivery Resulted in
Disaster for Bethpage Homeowners
On February 3, fire ojficials estimate 50-100 gallons of home heating oil was
spilled into the basement of this Berkshire Road home in Bethpage during the
morning hours. The Bethpage fire department was called to the home for a
possible natural gas leak and found that oil had been delivered to the home
that had previously converted to gas. The oil delivery was made through an old
oil fill pipe, which resulted in contaminating the home. Hicksville Fire
Department and Nassau County Hazardous Materials units were called to the
scene. Nassau County Police were also called since the delivery person left the
scene. Clean up and damage is estimated in the tens of thousands of dollars.
As the Tribune went to press, officials are investigating to locate the company
responsible for the spill. Photos and details by Kevin Imm
Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano presented a citation to
Gina Boccio of Bethpage, on January 29, 2010. Gina, a student at
Nassau Community College, was on vacation in Haiti with her
boyfriend, Jeff St. Gerard, when the earthquake struck. Gina's parents
contacted County Executive Mangano in a Facebook message asking
for help in locating Gina and Jeff, who were unable to reach anyone as
home. It wasn't until they heard her being interviewed on the radio
that her parents knew she was safe at the U.S. Embassy and on her
way home on a military plane.
While Gina and Jeff were at the Embassy, they volunteered to take
5-year old Moise Stanley home to his mother in Brooklyn. Tlie boy
had been staying in Haiti with relatives, who all were killed in the
earthquake. Gina and Jeff escorted Moise back to the United States,
where he was reunited with his mother.
"I am happy that Gina and Jeff made it home safely after their
ordeal," said County Executive Mangano. "I am especially touched by
the fact that they performed this act of kindness in the middle of the
tragedy unfolding around them, and saw to it that a little boy made it
back home to his mother. I congratulate them both and thank them on
behalf of all residents of Nassau County."
