Five Bethpage High School seniors have earned honors in the 2011
National Merit Scholarship Program, a competition presented by the National
Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). National Merit Semifinalist Jasdeep
Singh and National Merit Commended Students Daniel Alanko, Amy Gaines,
Joe Mastanduno, and Samin Syed earned their respective recognitions as a
result of their 2009 Preliminary State Assessment Test (PSAT) scores.
As a Semifinalist, Jasdeep is one of the highest-scoring entrants in New
York State. The status makes him eligible to be considered for Finalist standing
with the prospect of earning one of three types of Merit Scholarship awards.
Daniel, Amy, Joe, and Samin received Letters of Commendation in recognition
of their academic promise, and can also apply for Special Scholarships through
the NMSC.
Congratulations to all five students for their academic achievements that
have resulted in recognition from this competitive academic scholarship pro-gram.
OYSTER BAY TOWN SUPERVISOR'S
5 KILOMETER RUN
Oyster Bay Town Councilman Chris Coschignano presents Bethpage
speedster Dominique Isnardi with her award.
609 runners and walkers made their way to Oyster Bay on Saturday
morning, for the 27th annual edition of the Oyster bay Town Supervisor's 5
Kilometer Run. A clear, crisp Autumn morning made conditions perfect for a
very competitive - and very enjoyable - event!
Chris Mammone of Massapequa (15:21) outlasted Matt Walsh of Wantagh
(15:33) to score his second consecutive win in the Oyster Bay Run, earning
himself the $500 winner-take-all prize graciously provided by Bob Cook and
The Runner's Edge. This year The Runner's Edge came up with a $500 prize
for the first woman as well, and Leo Petrina of Bayport responded with a
race record breaking 17:14 finish, 18 seconds in front of Meagan Krifchin of
Bellmore. The highly competitive field could boast of the first 14 finishers
(including the first three women) under 18 minutes, and 53 finishers breaking
the magic 20 minute mark. Mammone, who now lives in Massapequa, was
the first Town of Oyster Bay resident to cross the finish line and fellow
Massapequan Michele Grieco earned the Award as the first female TOBAY
resident to finish.
Bethpage's Isnardi family came home from Oyster Bay with plenty of
awards: Diane Isnardi took first place honors in the Athena 160 pound plus
Weight Division, Diane's daughter Dominique Isnardi took 2nd place honors
in the Women's 15-19 age group, and sister Desiree Isnardi earned the 5h
place award plaque in the women's 20-24 age group.
Thanks go to the Town of Oyster Bay for partnering with the Greater
Long Island Running Club on what could be the most interesting 5K course
on Long Island. The Run starts on South Street at the comer of Irving Place,
and a quick left onto Berry Hill Road brought the runners to a solid mile and
a quarter of uphill before the turn onto Sandy Hill Road for a solid mile and
a quarter of downhill before the field turned onto East Main Street and head-ed
for the finish in the Townsend Square Parking Lot.
Supervisor John Venditto and the Town Board have been incredible sup-porters
of local recreatioonal sports, and GLIRC President Mike Poiansky
expressed his excitement that Councilman Chris Coschignano has now
brought his law firm Sahn Ward Coschignano & Baker on board as the pre-senting
sponsor. Thanks also go to Ron Berkowitz for making KidStrong
juices available to the participants, and to Keeper Springs Natural Spring
Water for jumping on board to donate the water for the event. A special thank
you to Allan Sobel and South Shore Outdoor for providing the runners with
those great sweatsnirts!
