American Cancer Society Thanks Bethpage for Another
SUCCESSFUL RELAY FOR H H
On behalf of the American Cancer Society and
the planning committee for the 2010 Relay For
Life event, we would like to thank the residents of
this wonderful community for their generosity and
support. Fifty teams walked on the beautiful track
at Bethpage High School through the night on
June in an effort to help raise $97,000 and still
counting!
Prior to the event. Survivors and their guests
enjoyed a delicious dinner catered by the Fratemal
Order of Police and sponsored by the Bethpage
Federal Credit Union. Entertainment was provid-ed
by the Bethpage High School Jazz Ensemble,
String Quintet and Saxaphone Quintet. Thank
you to Legislator Rose Walker who always takes
time out of her busy schedule to join us for
Opening Ceremonies. Following Opening
Ceremonies the community came together to
honor our Survivors who walked the track in their
Victory Lap and were then joined by their
Caregivers. After that, the crowd of 1000+ people
was invited to all join in as everyone walked the
track together.
At nightfall we had our very moving
Luminaria Ceremony. Our silent memory lap was
led by Mr. Kevin Healy on the bagpipes. Over
1500 luminaria bags lined the track, each one rep-resenting
someone who has fought, or continues
to fight cancer.
There are so many people to thank for their
support in making this event the huge success that
it was. First we must thank our planning commit-
Catholic Health Services (CHS) of
Long Island announced today that New
Island Hospital in Bethpage, NY, has
been renamed St. Joseph Hospital. St.
Joseph Hospital became a member of
CHS in January, 2010.
In recent years, St. Joseph Hospital,
as New Island, has achieved financial
stability, while objectively improving the
quality of care, enhancing servicc excel-lence,
renovating and modernizing, and
adding many new successful clinical
services and programs. As a member of
CHS, St. Joseph Hospital will continue to
improve and expand, while benefiting
from the synergies and economies of
scale enjoyed by all CHS member insti-tutions.
"St. Joseph Hospital is a community-based
hospital with an outstanding physi-cian
network and dedicated staff, who
offer the highest quality care to our
neighbors," said CHS president and CEO
James Harden. "CHS is committed to
ensuring that St. Joseph Hospital contin-ues
to provide excellent care to our
patients in a responsive and accessible
community setting."
"St. Joseph is patron of the universal
Church and one of the most widely rec-ognized
and commonly honored saints
around the world," stated Sister Elaine
Callahan, OP, chair of the Board of
Directors. "Through the honor of this
namesake, we continue the Catholic
Church's rich tradition of providing qual-ity
and compassionate medical care."
"Recent independent quality reviews
confirm that St. Joseph, as New Island,
delivered superior care in a wide variety
of health service areas, with mortality
and infection rates well below the New
York average in all reported categories,"
• said Aaron E. Glatt, MD, president and
CEO of St. Joseph Hospital. "We intend
to remain true to our mission to provide
great health care with compassion.
Patients can often be treated better in
their friendly community hospital, with
the same high-tech equipment, but in a
much more comfortable environment."
