In the early part of 2007, John and Carol McGrorty were devastated
when doctors told them that their son, Matthew, had a rare form of liver
cancer. Matthew was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma just before his 3rd
birthday. He. was a very brave little boy who underwent 15 months of treat-ment
before losing his battle to the disease. Young Matthew fought long
and hard against the cancer that took his life on June 18, 2008. During his
fight, Matthew McGrorty was almost never seen without his DVD Player
it was his favorite thing and helped keep his mind occupied while he bat-tled.
Matthew loved his blue truck, watching the planes at Republic
Airport, and seeing the trains coming into and out of the station. When he
felt well enough, he would love to play at the playground down the block
from his home. On April 19th, 2010 the community of Bethpage came
together to celebrate the naming of that playground on the corner of
Flamingo Lane and Caffery Avenue as well as the dedication of a new T-ball
field in honor of this brave young boy. Matthew's twin sister Ashlynn
was the first player to ever hit on that field. Bethpage Baseball scheduled
only one game that day, a T-ball game.
The day was filled with emotion and was a fitting tribute to a brave
young boy who will surely be missed but never, ever forgotten. This T-bah
field will serve as a lasting memorial to a boy whose face lit up a room.
Town of Oyster Bay Officials, Nassau County Officials as well as family
members and hundreds of friends took part in this special day. Matthew
Brian McGrorty Memorial Park will serve the children and families of our
community and a lasting tribute to a boy whose heart was filled with love.
