Volume 4$ Number 14 THANK YOU, George!
Bethpage Tool & Hardware To Close After 7 Decades of Serving Our Community
It is a true understatement to say that if
you live in Bethpage you know and love
Bethpage Tool & Hardware, along with the
friendly face of George Johnson who was a
fixture at the store for decades. Bethpage
Tool and Hardware served our community
since 1941 and was a place where you
could find the answers to just about every
home fix-it problem that you could imag-ine.
From electrical supplies, to nuts and
bolts, from paint and wood stain to having
keys made, from plungers to garbage cans
and everything in between, Bethpage Tool
& Hardware has been the place to go.
But it wasn't just the vast array of mer-chandise
that necessitated a trip to this his-toric
Bethpage landmark. It goes back to
the days of Leo & Harriet Schottland and
continued with George Johnson who were
true friends of the community and to so
many of our residents. They didn't just
own a store they were the heartbeat of the
town. You walked in to buy a shovel and
stayed for an hour chit chatting about the'
good ol' days. Sadly, in a little over a
week, Bethpage Tool & Hardware will be
closing their doors.
As a hardware store, Bethpage Tool &
Hardware was second to none. A place to
buy just about anything and get the advice
any do-it-yourselfer would need to accom-plish
his project. George took the time to
make sure you knew what you were doing
and had the right parts and tools to make
sure you succeeded. Always smiling,
always kind and considerate, George was a
hardware genius and most of all he was a
dear friend and a loyal resident.
Just driving around our community you
can see empty stores cropping up all over.
The cost of doing business in these tough
economic times can be impossible. And
while stores come and go the loss of
Bethpage Tool and Hardware is something

that is certainly not easy. There are only a
handful of stores...mom and pop business-es,
that offer personal service with a staff
that is so knowledgeable and dedicated.
That it is why it is so important for us all
to shop locally first!
On a personal note, George has gotten
me out of more painting debacles than I
would care to admit. He would literally
cringe when I would emerge at his counter
holding paint brushes. He has made every
key to my home and changed many a lock
that I locked myself out of. He's repaired
screens, recommended light bulbs, cut me
plexiglass and mixed my deck stain. Most
importantly, he is and always will be a dear
friend. Every town needs a,George! And
while George is embarking on a new and
exciting hardware adventure, we all will
1974, taking the "key" and qwnership of
certainly miss our dear friend and the
neighborhood hard\vk^ store we all loved.
So hurry stop in before'lthe doors close!
George, Bethpage thd^ you for years
of service, and for being such a special
person in all our lives. You mean more to
our community than we could ever explain
and we wish you the best of luck in your
new position. Most importantly, we hope
you know how appreciative we are for the
years of service you have provided our
community. Your generosity, sincerity and
kindness are why we all love you!
Although the doors have closed at
Bethpage Tool & Hardware, we are lucky
to have you as part of our communit)^ only
this time you 7/ be on the other side of the
counter We love you George... Thank
you!!!
