Scavenger Hunt for A Cause
Bethpage Student Surpasses Lymphedema Fundraising Goal
National Lymphedema Network medical advisory committee member
Bonnie Lasinski (center) presents a certificate of appreciation to
Bethpage High School senior Jordan Schessler (left) for hosting a scav-enger
hunt to raise money for awareness and education of lymphedema.
Also pictured (right) is school social worker Christine Kennedy, who
assisted Jordan in this effort.
Bethpage High School senior Jordan Schessler twice exceeded her
goal to raise funds for the education and cure of Lymphedema. With the
help of school social worker Christine Kennedy and 15 members of the
teaching staff, Jordan raised $2,000 for the National Lymphedema
Network by hosting a schoolwide scavenger hunt. Approximately 85
students participated in the activity, during which they searched for
clues in the library, art room, band room, gymnasium, and other loca-tions
throughout the school. Each member of the winning team received
a $5 gift card.
Lymphedema is a blockage of the lymph nodes, vessels that drain
fluids throughout the body and allow immune cells to travel where they
are needed. This condition hits close to home for Jordan, who was diag-nosed
with lymphedema at nine years of age. Jordan also volunteers her
time in the National Lymphedema Network's regional office in
Woodbury, where she counsels patients.
"Jordan's attitude is infectious," National Lymphedema Network
medical advisory committee member Bonnie Lasinski stated. "The scav-enger
hunt was a great opportunity for young people to participate and
make a difference for a good cause. I hope similar fundraising efforts
take fire in other schools."

Ilasi, Allyssa Szynal, and Kristina Milutinovic were the winners

for lymphedema research and education.
