DEFYINGAGING
WITH A CHEER
Bethpage Senior Eagles Join
Varsity Cheerleading Team for Halftime
Demonstration
The Bethpage Senior Eagles are photographed with the Bethpage
High School varsity cheerleaders and coach Ms. Jesica Tavolacci (bot-tom-

of Schools Mr Terrence Clark (top-right) during a cheer demonstration
at the Senior/Community Center in Bethpage.
Bethpage seniors defied the common notions associated with aging
as they joined the Bethpage High School Varsity Cheerleading Team
during the January 16 basketball game's halftime. Called the Bethpage
Senior Eagles, this small group of enthusiastic senior citizens gladly
demonstrated their newly acquired moves for peers at the Bethpage
Senior/Community Center.
Varsity cheerleading coach Ms. Jesica Tavolacci explained that the
idea to include senior citizens in cheering at the game was, in essence,
an invitation for older residents to become more involved in the
District's athletic program and other activities in the schools. The
Bethpage Senior Eagles practiced with' the cheerleaders twice prior to
the game and, not only received a great workout, but gained newly
acquired friendships with a much younger generation.
Cheerleading captain Amanda Houston remarked that she felt
"blessed" being a part of this activity. "I feel the team really accom-plished
something," she stated. "It's great that the seniors, even though
they are aging, are still able to get out and participate. They did a really
great job."
Bethpage Senior Eagles President/Director Ms. Ann Mirto claimed
that time with the cheerleaders was a "fantastic experience." She com-mented,
"Seniors should get more involved with the local school district
and help out whenever they can. The seniors thank Mr. Clark for all of
his good work." Photos provided by Elizabeth Sobel, Syntax.
