Are These Your Children ??
The Ten O'clock Commercial on manyof the major
television networks ask, "DO YOU KNOW WHERE
YOUR CHILDREN ARE TONIGHT?" The message is
poignant and directed to parents who may be remiss or
negligent of their responsibility towards their children.
In Bethpage, many homeowners know where a
sizeable number of children are in the early and late
evening hours - on SCHOOL DISTRICT PROPERTY!
The homeowners have one common factor - their
property is adjacent to one of the seven schools within
the Bethpage School District.
Although the school district permits ballplaying,
utilization of basketball courts, playground equipment,
in an orderly manner, this is not the homeowners
objection. The core of contention is teenagers loitering
and destroying not only school property but, private
property adjacent to the schools.
The homeowners are subject to a full range of obscene
language and vulgarities drifting into backyards
and through open windows. Empty beer cans and wine
bottles strewen over school grounds and open fields are
evidence of a serious drinking problem among these
teenagers. On several occasions, fires have been set
against school buildings. After full investigation by the
y j f e m l & l S i™ the youthful offenders
were apprehended. However, teenagers continue to set
fire to shrubbery and fences on private property and
create costly damage. Promiscuity along with the
possibility of drug usage, is heightened on unsupervised,
darkened school ground areas.
At Centraimvd^^cJ^^windom^ere M p ^ -
^"fire works were thrown into the building; at the Fine
and Kramer Complex, the cyclone fencing was cut; at
Bloomingdale School, urinating against _school doors
has resulted in rotting the frames and floors. Young
adults are scaling school buildings and loitering on
roofs. The blatant conduct of many of the teenagers
both from within and outside the district, constitutes a
physically dangerous/destructive and costly situation.
Window breakage alone, has cost the taxpayer
thousands of dollars annually, not including untotaled
amounts of money spent on repairs that could be used
for educational purposes. Homeowners and School
District authorities are constantly aware ot the
deplorable situation. The Police Department^ and
School Security cannot be in all places, at all times.
The basic responsibility must be with pwents. DO
YOU REALLY KNOW WHERE YOUR TEENAGERS
ARE OR DO YOU JUST THINK YOU DO???

Chen Out
State
Johnson
Senator Owen
today continued
his attack on Jack Chen,
the controversial, Chinese
Communist curriculum
consultant to the New
York State Education
Department.
Johnson said, "Chen is
now running around the
State, preaching the party
dogma. It's a disgrace to
see Education Department
officials squander taxpayer's
money, sub-*
sidizingthis 'Chou En-Lai
type' for $12,000."
After a storm of protest
and tteeats from several
State legislators, Johnson
said he received
a s s u r a n c e s From
Education Commissioner
Ewald Nyquist's office
that Chen was only
working on a cultural
enrichment^ progranL
about Red China, which
would be offered on an
elective basis to school
districts. Nyquist's office
premised that the former
Communist- newspaper
editor's activities would be
closely monitored.
The 4th District
lawmaker explained:
"Two articles appeared in
the New York Times on
Saturday, June 23rd, in
w h i c h f o r e i gn
correspondents discussed
atrocities and horrible
conditions prevailing in
Red China. Yet on June
24th, Jack Chen was
written up in the New York
Times discussing all the
virtues and wonders of
Communist Chinese
living.'' There is a vast
difference in Chen's views
to those of the two foreign
correspondents.
"It is bad enough that
the American news media-is
already a big sponge for
Communist propaganda
through many spokesmen
and groups. We should not
tolerate^any longer, Jhis
Communist propagandist,
subsidized at New York
State taxpayer's expense,"
said Senator
Johnson.
Johnson says he will
meet with Education
in
the
the
Committee members
the Senate and
Assembly during
special legislative session.
He hopes to outline a
campaign to have Chen's
contract cancelled with
the State.

Louis J. Frank today reported the
department's FARE program
(Fatal Accident Reduction -
Enforcement) had resulted in
2,587 traffic tickets being issued
in its first month of operation.
The FARE program consists of

The federally funded program
is operating in six counties in

In addition to the FARE
