Case Defends Policy
Jjeelwring that the Federal
Emergency Employment Act
was never meant to be a "make-work"
project, Nassau County
Executive Ralph G. Caso today
defended his administration's
placement of the unemployed in
public service jobs.
"It would have been very easy
to fill the 521 jobs alloted to
Nassau County by hiring people
to push brooms in the streets,"
Caso asserted. "But this would
not have helped the unemployed
or the taxpayer who is footing the
bill for the $3,596,800 the federal
government has alloted to the
county.
"Like in so many other federal
projects, they put up the money
to start with, but later cut back
the funds and leave local
government with the choice of
footing the entire bill or
eliminating the program," he
said. "I will nc«t implement a
broom pushing program in this
county realizing that one day I
may have to take the brooms
back."
The county executive said all
applicants for jobs are being
screened through the Nassau
Civil Service Commission to
determine their qualifications for
exicting job titles.

"There are
positions and some require more
qualifications than others," Caso
stated. "But they all involve
workers the departments know
they can use."
Once qualified for a job by Civil
Service, the person does not have
to fear disqualifications during
the two-year period the
Emergency Employment Act is
in effect. At the end of that time,
the person also would be qualified
for a permanent job_opening.
While the county has been
alloted money to place 521 persons,
the number slated for jobs
in county government is 323. The
rest are being placed in the three
towns and two cities.
As of Tuesday, Jan. 11, 133
persons have been accepted for
county jobs, 67 have been approved
by Civil Service and are in
the process of being interviewed
by department heads and 200
applications are in the process of

arrangements are being made

Flu on the Loose
County Deputy Health Commissioner
Dr. David H. Ross,
Director of the Department's
Bureau of Epidemiology reports
that the Virology Laboratory at
the Nassau County Medical
Center has uncovered eleven
cases of Hong Kong Type 'A'
influenza in the last two days.
The "Hong Kong flu" first
appeared in 1968 and reappeared
in 1969 and 1970 showing the same
signs and symptoms of fever,
chills, headache, muscle aches,
coughing and fatigue. It usually .
takes anywhere from two to
seven days to recover completely.
As a preventive measure,
vaccination has been effective in
many cases, but if the patient has
not yet had the vaccine, it is too
late to protect against the current
outbreak. The U.S. Public Health
Service recommended that
persons with respiratory and
cardiovascular , diseases be
immunized against the Hong
Kong strain of influenza, but the
American Public Health
Association has discouraged
routine innoculation of healthy
children and young adults in
community-wide immunization
programs. Last Fall, the Nassau
County Health Department
distributed enough such vaccine
for 4,840 doses.
If you think you may be coming
down with "the flu", the best
advice is to stay home and call
your physician.

is cordially invited to attend.
