TOB Approves Commuter Parking
LOCAL ATHLETE CITED: Lou Lauther, former Plainedge High
School star and Recreation Supervision major, voted the "Most
Valuable Player" in gymnastics on the 1972 team, receives coveted
award for his achievements from Coach Bob Hess (left), while Dr.
Charles W. Laffin, Jr., President of the college, looks on during the
53rd annual Sports Banquet held at State University at.Farmingdale.
The home-town pride has been Regional Junior College title holder
for the past two years and is rated sixth in the country in all-around.
Town supervisor John
W. Burke announced that
the Town Board has
authorized a modified
commuter parking field
program that calls for a
combination of metered
and non-metered parking
sites.
"This program reflects
the views and comments of
the general public as
expressed at the public
hearing on February 15, "
Burke said. "It represents
a considerable reduction
in both the cost and the
number of meters
originally proposed."
Today's action
authorizes the expenditure
of $200,000 for the purchase
and installation of 1,765
parking meters at various
commuter parking fields
as opposed to the $350,000,
for 3,148 meters originally
proposed. The plan calls
for the metering of less
than half of the 3,743
parking stalls in the 22
commuter parking fields
located in the communities
of Bethpage, Hicksville,
Massapequa and Syosset.
These metered stalls
will be those that are in
Health Services For
Women In Plainview
Dr. Robert H. Niebling, Acting
Nassau County Commissioner of
Health announced today that the
Nassau County Health Department
is expanding its services for
women, offered at the Plainview
and Hempstead Health Centers.
According to Dr. Niebling, the
two centers will be providing the
new services in conjunction with
existing clinic activities.
"For the first time," the Acting
Commissioner said, "our
Plainview Health Center will be
making available certain
preventive and therapeutic
g y n e c o l o g i c services.
Examinations, tests, and
treatment will include Pap
smears for cancer detection,
cervical cultures and breast
examinations by qualified
specialists." The added service
will be available beginning
Tuesday morning, June 20,1972.
The Hempstead Health Center,
at 800 Front Street, and at the
Plainview Center, at 1535 Old
Country Road, are offered by
Appointment to eligible women.
For an appointment at the
Hempstead Family Planning
Clinic, call 538-2800. Appointments
for the Plainview
Gynecologic Clinic can be made

close proximity to the
station. The remaining
stalls will remain free of
meters and be available on
a first-come, first-served
basis.
"The revised program
was developed by the
Commissioner of Public
Works in conjunction with
the engineering consultant
firm of Samuel J. Green
and Associates and incorporates
many of the
suggestions made at the
public hearing." Burke
said.
"A considerable number
of alternatives were
weighed," he added, "and
this program was found to
be the most equitable for
both the regular commuter
as well as the occasional
user of the
facilities.
"The demand for public
parking throughout the
Town has increased at a
tremendous rate in just the
past few years," Burke
pointed out, "and we no
longer can rely solely on
an ad valorem tax and
sticker fees to develop and
maintain these facilities."
Watch Those Wooden Nickels!
Many long Islanders who
during the past month were
presented with some lOO.OOO
wooden nfr***« commemorating
the 55th Anniversary of the Long
Island National Bank, this week
received proof-positive that
"wooden nickels can be
valuable."
James C. Dinkelacker, the
bank's president, revealed that
more than a thousand of the
distributed wooden nickels bear
the bank's emblem stamped with
ink that is invisible to the naked
eye, but can be discerned under
an ultra-violet lamp.
These lucky wooden nickels,
are being redeemed for valuable
prizes at the bank's 11 offices in
Nassau and Suffolk Counties
during the two-week commemorative
period June 19
through the 30th.
Persons who, during the past

images of the American nickel,

any of the Long Island National
Bank's offices, and placing them
under ultra-violet lamps
provided for the identification,
Mr. Dinkelacker explained:
"When a lucky nickel glows
under the light, its owner knows
he has a winner, and collects a
prize."
Mr. Dinkelacker further said
that during the two-week
celebration, other prizes (gifts)
are being presented to all persons
opening new accounts and
"joining the large Long Island
National family."
Knock! Knock! Who's There!
Tow. Clerk Isabel R. Dodd
today (Jane 19) issued a warning
to Town of Oyster Bay residents
to be alert tor unlicensed door-to-ithe

recently, we are finding some
that are not."
One cine to legitimacy of a
peddler is the 1972 solicitor's
license which most be carried. It
is laminated aad issued by the
office of the Town Clerk. This
license incudes a photograph of
the licensee aad is proof that he
or she has been investigated by
law enforcement officials.
Mrs. Dodd urged residents to
call the police or the Town
Clerk's office if they are approached
by hawkers, solicitors
or salesmen who fail to display a
license upon request. She added
that licenses are art required by
newspaper carriers and political
or religioas organiiations.
"However." she said, "many
religious denominations also
issue warnings to be wary of
salesmen claiming to represent a
certain church, synagogue or
parish unless they, too. can
provide identification."
Tax Break
For Elders
State Senator Ralph J. Marino
(R-Syosset) announced that
Governor Nelson Rockefeller has
signed a bill into law expanding
the benefits of real estate tax
exemptions to senior citizens.
Marino, a sponsor of the new
law, said it would ease inflations
impact on retired persons who,
living on fixed incomes, have no
financial means to meet the costs
of rising taxes. The law raises
from $5,000 to $6,000 the amount
of income property-owners over
65 may have and still be eligible
for a 50 percent tax break.
Said Marino, "Ibis is one of
many attempts to distribute the
tax burden equitably. The real
estate tax is based on the
assumption of ability to pay
according to the value of
property. As a result, persons
past their ability to increase their
incomes are penalized and often
forced out of their homes because
they just can't pay the rising tax
bill."
Marino advised that senior
citizens who believe they are
eligible check with their villages
or townships when the law
becomes effective on September
1, 1972.
