No Room At the Inn
. Two thousand years ago
a humble man named
Joseph and bis young wife,
Mary, expecting the birth
of a child, entered the city
of Jerusalem. They had
traveled long weary miles.
As Mary's time drew near,
it became more urgent
that they find suitable
shelter; but, as the ancient
tale goes, there was no
room at the inn and the
babe was born in a stable.
Two thousand years
later in America, greatly
herailled for advanced
t e c h n o l o g y . space
wizardry, and wealth
beyond the imagining by
our ancestors, the age-old
problem still exists. . .no
room at the inn.
. As the spirit of the holy
season grows and we
chance to look inside
ourselves, does it not occur
to us that our sense of
values has become rather
distorted?
One recalls the time
when children were
considered a "gift from
God", a blessing-now all
we hear about is the "pill"
and "abortion"; we are
practical to the point of
being sterile of heart and
barren of soul.
We are very busy these
days being "planners"-
everybody is planning
everything, everywhere.
But the biggest plan of all
seems to be to shut out the
have-nots.
America, the home of
the free and brave, is no
home at all to many. .
There is no room at the
Inn for the youth of today;
young people are at a
complete disadvantage. At
least, 25 years ago, there
was a Levittown
created...but now what?
A token amount of
housing had been built for
senior citizens (36 apartments
for 300 applicants
here in Bethpage), but
people with children might
just as well drown them
because apartments with
children in them are more
to be feared than Communists...
No Room at the
Inn.
It makes one wonder
what it is all about.
Perhaps a little love and
heart could be put into the
planning and room could
be found in this and other
communities to welcome
children, young people, the
returning veteran, and all
our old folks. That would
be a more meaningful plan
than any we have yet seen.
