TOB HIRES YOUTH FOR
COMMUNITY PROJECTS
Town Supervisor John W.
Burke announced today a
program designed to give youth
an opportunity to get directly
involved in many of the community
problems in which they
have frequently expressed
concern.
"The Town Youth Bureau is in
the process of hiring U youths,
one from each of the Town's
Youth Councils, to serve as
Action Project Coordinators in
their respective communities,"
Burke said. "Each coordinator
will be salaried at $1,000 per year
and will be responsible for
organizing and initiating action
on projects of concern to the
youths in his council as well as
projects initiated by the Town
under State or Federally funded
programs," Burke added.
Those selected as . Action
Project Coordinators will be
trained by Youth Bureau personnel
in the fields of community
organization, sensitivity to
community issues, effective
social, relations and recognition
of community problems.
"In Youth Council meetings,
the members have frequently
expressed a sincere concern for a
number of critical social issues in
our community," Burke noted.
"Now, they Will have the opportunity
to put their concern into
action."
The project will have the full
cooperation and support of the
Drug Abuse Control Agency
(DACA), according to its coordinator,
Mrs: Adeline Petite.
"Meaningful involvement in
community action projects is an
effective way of combating the
boredom that often leads to drub
abuse," she said.
A candidate for the position of
Action Project Coordinator
should be a member of his or her
Youth Council. The individual
must be at least 17 years of age, a
student in good standing, and be a
capable and highly energetic
organizer. .
"Above all," Burke noted,
"this person must be concerned
about participating in the
governmental process and
carrying out of projects useful to
his community."
Starts Austerity Year
-The Plainedge School Budget
was defeated on August 19th. This
was the third vote for the district.
The vote will not be put up again
and the district will be on an
austerity budget. Because of this
austerity budget there will be a
self-cafeteria program only in the
schools. There will be no inter-scholastic
sports and transportation
will also be limited to a
2 to 3 mile distance from schools.
In spite of the austerity budget
there will be some new programs
for the district. Two extended
readiness courses for first
graders who are not quite
prepared for school have been
created. There will be one more
learning disability class in addition
to the two primary and
intermediate classes. A whole
series of electives will be
available for 12th Graders. Each
elementary school will have a
math lab. A new elementary
science curriculum will be
inaugurated. Last but not least,
there will be a pilot program in
the senior high for a community
school - a school within a school
for seniors beyond English and
Social Studies, who can develop
there own program in research
projects and community
projects. A number of fifty
students will be included in this
program.
The next public meeting for the
Plainedge School Board is set for
September 9th. The new total tax
rate is $14.41.
