progress of the Bethpage Community swimming team.
What is heralded as "another
important step in the fight
against drugs in the Town of
Oyster Bay" will be realized
Friday, Oct. 1. when Town

inaugurates a training
course for 11 Youth Council

It is the first project of its kind on
a Youth Council level.

Action Project Coordinators in
their respective communities.

board after passing requirements
which included Youtn Council
membership; at least 17 years of
age; a atudetot- to good ataaOtatg

"It is indeed a pleasure to
welcome these young people into
this all-important program,"
Supervisor Burke said yesterday.
"Their job ahead is just as
HOWARD LIKES THE TWO PARTY SYSTEM - Howard Kotin, IS,
of 7 Briggs, Bethpage, was able to renew his acquaintance with
Yankee rookie star Ren Blomberg, at Yankee Stadium, because
eventually he knew the answer to a very tricky question. Howard
was at the Getty Oil Company - Long Island Railroad party which
toured four towns on Long Island Railroad on a flat car, featuring
Blomberg, pitcher Lindy McOaniel and first baseman John Ellis. At
Farmingdale, Jack Specter of WMCA Radio Sports Call asked the
question-"off whom did Hank Aaron hit his first Major League
homer?" He didn't know the answer then, but by the time the party
rolled into the next station, he did, and when Specter asked it again,
Howard said "Vic Raschi of the Cardinals" and he had himself a trip
to Yankee Stadium with a red carpet behind-the-scenes tour and time
on the field with the players. Howard, left, is shown with Blomberg
and bis brother, Milton, 17, on the field during the Yankees final
home series with Cleveland. Howard and an older friend had driven
from Farmingdale to Ilicksville and he was ready with the right
answer as. soon as Spec tor asked the question.

Tobay Seeks Grant For Recycling
Town Supervisor John W.
Burke announced Tuesday the
adoption of a Town Board
resolution to seek a federal grant
to support a study of the
economic feasibility of broad-based
municipal recycling and to.
construct a pilot plant Tor a new
system of processing and
recycling solid waste.
The system, known as the
Nitrocell Process, is a
development of Environistics,
Inc., a division of Instrument
Systems Corporation of Jericho,
N.Y. The process reduces
cellulose-based materials into a
series of marketable end
products, such as paper pulp and
rayon, plus the extraction and
recovery of other valuable
chemicals for industrial use.
"We hope to be able to
demonstrate the economic
feasibility of this process in our
continuing battle against the
solid, waste problem," Burke
said. "It has Uie singular appeal
of not only providing a non-polluting
means of solid waste
disposal, but also a return on
investment in the equipment can
be realized through the sale of the
recycled end products."
The application is based on the
Resource Recovery Act whereby
the Federal Government would
assume 100 percent of the cost of
•the pilot plant. The recycling
study portion of the grant would
be funded on a 2 3 - 1 3 basis,
with the Town's 1. 3 share being
contributed by in-kind services in
the form of the project director's
salary.
"In ' this fashion," Burke
pointed out, "the Town can obtain,
whith no expenditure of
-public money, the construction
and development of a new pilot
system for recycling solid waste
and practical guidance on the
sale of recyclable materials."
