Town Supervisor John W.
Burke this week proposed the

Control Commission
to better deal with today's needs
in environmental management.
Burke, citing the "excellent
work" done by the Town

was timely to consider
broadening the scope of the
Town's activities and take a more
realistic approach toward
preserving and restoring our
suburban environment. "The

Goldweber Proposes
Clear Food-dating
Max Goldweber, Democratic
candidate for State Senate in the
4th District, last night told a
group of women supporters that
he favors clear, easy-to-read
listing of the last permitted day of
sale of perishable food items.
Speaking to a meeting at the
home of Mrs. Patricia Coffey, 21
Alden Lane, Levittown, Goldweber
said a shopper "now needs
the skill of a cryptographer to
determine whether a carton of
cottage cheese has passed its
prime."
"Cracking the Japanese code
was nothing compared to what
the housewife goes through in the
supermarket trying to decipher
apparently meaningless combinations
of letters and numbers,"
Goldweber said. "Yet in
New York City, under the
provisions of a new law,
packages state very clearly, that
June 5 or October 8 is the last day
the item can be sold."
Goldweber said the Legislature
should extend the requirement
for straightforward open dating
of all eggs, bakery and dairy
products to the rest of New York
Stateand that he would introduce
such legislation if elected.
"A family in Levittown or East
Meadow has the same right to
know the age of what they buy in
the supermarket as the family in
Flushing or Bensonhurst,"
Goldweber concluded.
Committee on Environmental
Control, the chairman of the
Planning Advisory Board, the
director of the Division of En-viromental
control, the Town
harbor-master, the .chairman of
the South Oyster Bay Marine
Advisory Board and the Town
Attorney.
The powers and duties of the
Commission, as outlined by
Burke, include:
Advise the Town Board on
matters affecting the preservation,
development and use of
the natural apd manmade
features and conditions of the

issues.
Conduct studies, surveys and
inventories of the natural and
manmade features within. the
Town, with an up-to-date index of
all public and privately owned
spaces.
Serve as a coordinating force to
assist and unify the efforts of
groups and institutions within the
Town as well as maintain liaison
with local, State and Federal
agencies, associated with environmental
control.
Work with the Planning Advisory
Board in developing
recommendations concerning
environmental improvement for.
inclusion in the master plan for
the Town.
The Commission would be
authorized to accept, in the name
of the Town, gifts or bequests of
property for the purpose of
conserving or property utilizing
open spaces and other land and
water resources.
"This is an excellent opportunity
to provide a means far
igrjration of our suburban
support and expert _
the full-time, professionally
staffed Division of Environmental
Control, whose
director, David Mafrici, would
serve as executive secretary of
the Commission."
