ISLAND TREES
The Island Trees Board of
Education resubmitted a revised
budget to the district voters at
their special meeting July 19,
1971.
The revised figure of $9,021,035
for the 1971-72 school year was
reduced by approximately a y4 of
a million dollars. The new tax
rate is estimated at $12.59 per
$100 of assessed valuation.
Vice-President Anthony G.
Lancellotte said "cuts were made
in areas where they could best be
absorbed without hurting or
cutting any educational
programs. The passage of (*w
«rtp*»«r budget assures the
.atudento -qkyonttmring * sound
basic education plus the continuance
of the extra-curricular
programs and school services
that are a necessary part of
todays educational programs. We
do not like to make cutbacks, but
we are in a financial position
where there is no alternative -
the money is amply no t there - the
taxpayers are resisting further
burdensome taxation."
The Board revised thebudget in
areas of administrative consolidation,
reduced interest
changes, a freeze on top administrative
salaries and other areas
in the original budget package.
The voting for the Island Trees
budget takes place Tuesday, July
27, 1971, from 1-9 p.m. at the
Island Trees High School on
Straight Lane, Levittown.

The Bethpage Board of
Education met almost daily since
July 1,1971 to thoroughly review
and revise the defeated June 9th
budget.
This review revealed areas in
the budget that had been incorrectly
calculated and would
have substantially increased the
total assessment. However,
surplus funds of approximately
$150,000 were revealed and this
amount is being applied to the
proposed revised budget to help
reduce the tax rate.
The" Board advised the public
that an "Austerity Budget"
would deny the students transportation
to school. Parents
would be required to rent text
books and extra-curricular activities
would Ve terminated.
The new budget figure is
$11,463,034 and the estimated tax
rate is $11,965.
Voting for Bethpage residents
takes place on Wednesday, July
28,1971 from 12 Noon to 10 P.M. at
the Bethpage High School on
Cherry Avenue, Bethpage.

God bless little people and
Flavia . . . the much admired
California artist who paints little
people with a brush guided by an
imaginative warm heart.
Flavia became known when
her Child Art original paintings
were first shown in 1961. Her
wonderous ability to capture the
"magic of childhood" and the
nostalgic feelings of little people
endeared her work to many.
Born in Los Angeles, Flavia
moved when a child to Dallas,
Texas, but returned to beloved
California to attend college and
begin a business career in
department store merchandising.
Art was her self-taught
hobby and people became
her devoted interest.
Today in her Fountain Valley
studio with two lively children of
her very own to inspire her, and
Jack Weedn, a very understanding
husband to manage
her increased business dealings,
her life today has become filled
with gratifying accomplishments.
Like many artists, Flavia is a
warm, friendly, happy person,
perhaps a little shy, but very
understanding of the children 'and
quaint people she tenderly loves.
In her unusual artistic style she
succeeds with charming simplicity
to transmit the antics and
bitter sweet dreams of these
people to canvas so everyone can
share her love and deep feelings.
Progressing from many Pacific
Coast art exhibits of Flavia
Originals in 1962 through 1965,
Jack Weedn, sensing the exceptional
public acceptance of
her artistic talent, opened their
first "Flavia Gallery" at Laguna
Beach in 1965.
This was soon removed to a
Flavia, a fetching elusive California artist who has
become (temporarily and contemporarily) a nomad
of fashionable nostalgia is on a tour of the U.S. for
Buzza Cardoza Greeting Cards. Her Husband and two
children visited with Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Krinsky of
Bethpage during her appearance on Long Island,
larger gallery in the Disneyland cards and gift
Hotel shops where Flavia adorable Flavia
original paintings, cut out wood
figures, plaques, gift novelties
and her very own "Tweak" dolls
were sold. Then, soon afterwards,
a delightful rustic
Flavia shop was opened in
beautiful Snowmass, at Aspen,
Colorado, where every day a
quaint sign appears "Sort of
Open" on the two section door
entrance. During the summer of
1969, another unusual Flavia shop
called "Flavia's Upper Berth"
appeared at Whalers Wharf in the
famous Los Angeles Harbor area.
Many Californians and
countless art enthusiasts across
the nation know of Flavia, apart
from her delightful paintings.
Charming Flavia Christmas
wrapping,
Notes and
recently an appealing series of
Everyday greeting cards
reproduced by Buzza-Cardozo for
Birthdays and general occasions,
has gained her more fame. Two
Flavia Engagement Calendars
with delightful Flavia little
people depicting every month of
the year, are the hit of her
creations each Fall. A galaxy of
"Wall Plaque" room decorations
featuring many Flavia originals
mounted on rustic wood in three
popular sizes, along with a
Booklet in "The Flavor of
Flavia" are her latest releases by
Buzza. Two of Flavia's little
people are soon to appear as "do-it-
yourself" doll kits in time for
the 1972 holiday season.
