Moon Rocks
The moonrocks are coming to
Bethpage.
Mrs. Joan M. Cable, acting
president of the Bethpage
Community Advisory Council,
announced that arrangements
have been completed with the
National Aeronatuics Space
Administration in Washington
and that Bethpage will be allowed
to display the lunar moon rocks in
February.
. .A representative of the Bethpage
Community Advisory
Council, according to Mrs. Cable,
will fly down to N.A.S.A. in
Washington Feb. 17 and bring

being made with the Bethpage
Public Library to program this
display. Othere organizations are
being asked to align themselves
with this community program so
that adequate security and adults
may be on hand to handle the
crowds.
Bethpage school children will
view the moon rocks on certain
days and neighboring communities
will also be invited to
our hamlet to see the display.
The Bethpage Community
Advisory Council will work
closely with David Pinkwas
director of the Library. Further
information will be published in
" the future.
"We are tremendously pleased
that Bethpage will be given the
MOON ROCKS to display. Certainly,
with the kinship that Bethpage
holds toward Grumman and
their contribution to the Space
Program, our new legecy
denoting "BETHPAGE HOME
OF THE LUNAR MODULE"
establishes our right to this
exhibit" stated Mrs. Cable"
"We hope everyone will take
this opportunity to view the Moon
Rocks" she added.

The 20th century homemaker
accustomed to buying candies
and soap at the supermarket will
have an opportunity next
weekend at the Old Bethpage
village restoration to learn how
her 19th century counterpart
made the same items by hand.
Continuing its fail-winter series
of special events, the village will
offer demonstrations of soap
making and candle making Dec.
12 and 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The activities will be conducted
outdoors, as they would have
been in the pre Civil War era.
According to village curator
John Harbor, soap and candle
making were conducted in late
fall because they require hard fat
from slaughtered anumals. Cool
weather was necessary to
preserve the meat in pre-refrigeration
days.
The candle-making demonstrations
will feature bayberry,
which grows in abundance on
Long Island and produces a
pleasant odor. Bayberry growing
in Old Bethpage has been picked
and will be boiled to get the
•necessary wax to make candles.
The candle will then be dipped
rather than made in prepared
molds.
The soap making process to be
demonstrated was the most
widely used procedure in rural
areas.
Wood ashes would have been
collected in a leach barrel (one
with hole' «n the bottom), water
was poured »>ver this and the
result became home made lye.
The We was then added to fat
which had been rendered the
same as fo. candle making and
this was cooked over a hot fire
until the appropriate time when
salt Vk JS added.
"A great deal of guess work
was involved in determination of
the proper time to add salt",
Harbor notes. "However, if
