A bill authorizing the establish
merit of a branch of the Federal
Court in Westbury was passed by
the House of Representatives last
week.
The bill, H.R. 18126, sponsored
by Congressman John W. Wydler
(R-Nassau County) was called up
under an unusual procedure by
the Chairman of the House
J u d i c i a r y Committee,
Congressman Emanuel Celler.
This unanimous consent
procedure allowed the bill to be
passed at once, without approval
in the subcommittee and full
committee. It makes possible the

Wydler, "and to hasten it to the
President for early signature".

York covers Richmond, Kings,
Queens, Nassau and Suffolk

Buckley Rally
Senator Ralph J. Marino (R-East
Norwich), Assemblyman
William Burns (R-Amityville)
and Assemblyman Joseph M.
Reilly (R-Glen Cove) opened the
first hearing of the Ad Hoc
Committee to Investigate
Mortgage Frauds and Tax Lien
Sales at an all day session at the
Garden City Hotel Monday,
October 5. •
In an opening statement,
Marino, Chairman of the Committee
indicated' that. the com-financial
hard times.
Said Marino, "There are apparently
some unscrupulous real
estate speculators who have
made a career of taking advantage
of these homeowners
many of whom have substantial
equity in their homes but do not
want to be forced to move out of
their homes, uprooting heir
families and lives, to meet the
requirements of their creditors.
x The committee heard a number
of witnesses who explained
various ways they had been
bilked, out of their homes by
speculators who purchased
mortgages which were in default,
liens, judgments, and other legal
maneuvers where they thought
they could reap a' huge profit,
i isually these operators try to get
in and out as quickly as possible.
However, in some cases they are
apparently content to sit back
and wait until the taxpayer seeks
to sell his property or die.

The- committee also heard
several witnesses concerned
jhqjit.lhe «urrerat procedure for
V^Uensales. At the present time
the county sells tax liens and if
they are not redeemed within the
statutory period the purchaser of
the tax lien obtains a deed to the
propertyMt has recently been
revealed that some taxpayers
have lost their property because
they felt they were a.few hours
late in redeeming the tax lien.
The committee has pledged
legislation revamping the
structure foi the collection of
past due taxe on real property.
