Postmaster Notes Curbs
On Offensive Mailings
Patrick J. Foley, Bethpage
Postmaster, in an attempt- to
curb the "alarming increase" in
the amount of sexually-offensive
materials flooding the mails,
reminds customers they can take
steps to curb the flow of offensive
advertising into their homes
under the provisions of the
Pandering Advertisement
Statue.
According to Foley, under the
law, each addressee has the sole
right to decide for himself
whether an ad is offensive. If a
person receives an advertisement
which is, in his
opinion, "erotically arousing or
sexually provocative" be should
send the ad, its envelope and a
proper notice to the Postmaster
with the words, "Request for
Prohibitory Order," on the face
of the envelope.
"The Postal Service does not
decide if material is offensive.
We merely determine if the
matter is an advertisement,"
notes Foley.
Pamphlets (POD No. 123)
and/' or P.O. Department Forms
215D which can be used by patrons
in submitting their complaints
are available at local post office
stations, advised Foley.
The notices also may include
the names of children under 19
years of age residing at the same
address.
Foley adds that customers
receiving objectional material,
must note the date received on
the envelope with their signature,
no date appears thereon.
