There Ought to Be a Law
Contest For Students
r
Senator Kemp Hannon ( R-Nassau
) Is looking for a few good
ideas from school students in the
6th Senate District who are participating
in a "There Ought To Be
a Law" contest.
"Government works best when
the people get involved. The
"There Ought To Be A Law"
contest affords many of our school
students the opportunity to bring
their thoughts into public view",
stated Senator Hannon. "! am
hoping to stimulate some of the
thoughts of our younger residents
on how this state could be better
run".
The "There Ought To Be A Law"
contest is a contest comprised of
many students from throughout
the 6th Senate District. Each
participating student will submit
their idea for a new law in New
York State and these suggestions
will be judged. Each participating
school will have a winner. That
individual's idea will then be
judged against the other school
winners and a Grand Prize Winner
will be chosen.
Thirty-six schools are participating
In the 1992 contest representing
approximately 3300 students.
The sixth graders of St.
Martin of Tours and the JFK
Middle School in Bethpage are
participating In the contest, and
one of these students may have
the unique opportunity of having
their idea for a new law introduced
in the State Legislature.
The winners of each school will
participate in an awards ceremony
where the Grand Prize Winner will
be announced. The winner of the
Grand Prize will receive a $100.00
Savings Bond.
In conclusion, Senator Hannon
said, "It's gratifying to see so many
students participate in a contest
which gives them an inside look
at the workings of state government.
I look forward to reviewing
all the entries in search of the idea
which will have a chance at
becoming part of our state laws".
