Housing Boom Hits Bothpage
Seems like houses are popping up all over Bethpage. New houses
that are being erected in a feverish pace. Two new cape homes were
built on Stewart Avenue and are reportedly sold already. On Broadway
we can now boast Teakwood Estates which will be host to four homes
three of which have already been started. Also a new hi ranch was
built on Stewart Avenue south of the railroad tracks. Looks like a bright
and promising sign of an upswing in the real estate market. Hopefully
this is a sign of our economy getting stronger.

When looking at the above
picture certainly New York City or
any other big city comes to mind.
This picture however was taken
right here in Bethpage a far cry
from New York City yet obviously
the problem of homelessness has
no boundaries...no restrictions as
to location, age, race, sex or
religion. In fact one could say that
homelessness is an equal opportunity
situation and sadly it afflicts
more people than we could ever
imagine.
Last Friday I was beginning my
weekly routine of grocery shopping,
dropping off clothing to the
dry cleaner and buying stamps at
the Post Office. When I saw this
woman, alone reorganizing her
cart I just had to stop and look at
her. I couldn't help but agonize
when looking at her tattered clothing,
dirty face and worn out
shoes. I saw that this woman was
selling pencils and I stepped out
of my car to give her a little
something to perhaps enable her
to eat. I handed the woman a $5
bill and she thanked me over and
over again begging me to take one
of her belongings as a token of her
gratitude. Of course refused but
accepted a pencil so that she did
not feel as though I were pitying
her. Unfortunately t was.
I spoke with her for about 5
minutes asking her where she slept
and if she had any place to go.
She told me that she as alone and
that she felt that Bethpage was a
safe place to be if you were
homeless. She went on to say that
she sold pencils and her belongings
to help her afford some meals
and in fact she said when she is
able she walks to the soup kitchen
in Hicksville to get a bite. She said
however that she was beaten up
there so she rather stay in and
around this area.
As I was getting back into my
car she walked over all the white
thanking me for the small donation.
She looked into the window
of my car and saw my son sleeping
contentiy in his car seat. She
looked at me and remarked as to
how happy he looked even asleep,
She said that she could tell just
by his face that he knew he was
loved and she said that he was so
lucky. With that my son woke up.
She glanced at him and a huge
smiie brightened up her worn face
and surprisingly a twinkle glistened
in her dark beaten eyes. She
asked his name and i told her
Salvatore. With that she reached
into her bag and gave me another
pencil which she said was just for
him. i reached into his diaper bag
