HELP GARY! Bethpage's Bravest
I was opening the Tribune mail recently and I received a letter that
was not only written straight from the heart but also touched me in
such a way that I felt we had to not only share it with our readers
but also do something about it. I'm sure that after reading it you too
will realize that there are many fellow residents who are suffering and
are in desperate need of help and support. I have often said that our
health Is certainly our most valuable asset and in this case vou will
see how not having it can destroy an individual. Please read the following
letter and remember how hard it was for these loving individuals to
share their story with their community. I guess it just emphasizes how
in need of help they really are.
Dear Linda,
I am writing to you because you are a very warm and understanding
person. I have been reading the Bethpage Tribune for many years
and I have enjoyed it more since you have become the editor. You
have given the paper more class and made it much more interesting
to all of us in Bethpage. The people In Bethpage have proven to be
a special group. They have joined together to help people who are
In need.
My family has lived in Bethpage for 31 years, and my husband is
retired from Grummans after 44 years.
Linda, r have a very sad story to tell you about my nephew Gary
Williams, in hope that you can help me to reach out for help for him
in his time of need.
Gary Is 39 years old and is an insulin dependent diabetic since he
was 13 years of age. Five years ago his kidneys failed and he had
to go on dialysis. He was fortunate to receive a kidney transplant at
Monteflori Medical Center in the Bronx, about 3 years ago. The kidney
lasted approximately 1 1/2 years. He had at least 3 rejections during
this time. In January 1991 his transplanted kidney failed and h© was
put back on dialysis. He lived in New Jersey at that time, but remained
a patient of Montefiore Medical Center.
My family and I were the only relatives he had in New York. W©

FINALLY...SNOW!
outside Is frightful, exctpt old i^m wintw waited till
.. 23 to make his appearance. The Nationai Weather S«rtice
estimated that Long island was hit with MMmi S - 7 inches of snow
which still makes us over 20 Inches shy of our usual mrerage. But
you never know — the faster Bunny may need a snow shovel to find
his way to Bethpage.
