RENOVATE HIGH SCHOOL
This year, some students at
Bethpage High School have taken
the initiative to do some "renovations"
at the high school. These
students are members of the Art
Club, a group which has recently
formed. Under the direction of
Mrs. Linda Candela, the Art
Department Chairperson, they
have undertaken numerous projects.
In addition to the traditional
fund-raising, as well as involvement
with the Homecoming activities,
they have worked in close
conjunction with Student Council,
often making the signs to advertise
Student Council functions.
The major project they have
been involved with is the new
mural in the High School's main
cafeteria. The Student Civic Association,
as part of their "School
Beasutification" program, suggested
a sprucing up of the
school's larger cafeteria. The
cafeteria had previously been
decorated with pictures of various
fruit and rainbows. But, with time,
the paint had faded, and the
designs needed to be redone and
redesigned.
The Art Club took over the
responsibility of designing the
new mural for the wall, and painting
the design. They held a school-wide
contest where people could
submit possible designs for the
cafeteria murai. After receiving
numerous entries, a "modern"
design was selected as the most
creative. Keven Hart's city sky- line
won.
By the end of January, the old
murals had been painted over, and
the designated wall primed for the
new. Kevin and Mrs. Candela
painted the design on the wail,
which included a city skyline, an
outline of a bridge, and a caricature
of a teenager. The vibrantly
colored mural, which spans the
cafeteria's entire main wall, is a
welcome change.
With the high cost of supplies
for such a project, the Art Club was
fortunate enough to have the
paints donated to them by a local
business. The paints were donated
by Steve Olsen of Orange Front,
a store located in Bethpage. Their
generosity enabled a quick completion
of the mural. This alliance
between school and local business
proved to be very successful.
Kevin's skyline although dramatically
different from the previous
design, has been well received by
students and faculty.
