FRIDAY NIGHT FIRE HITS ZORNS
Pictured above is the ceiling of Zorn's, a Bethpage catering facility,
which was opened by firefighters in order to extinguish the Friday
night blaze.
Friday night proved to be a
disasterous one for Zorn's, asafire
ripped through the catering facility,
causing large amounts of
damage. The fire, which is presently
under investigation, started
around 11 pm, Nov. 1 and was said
to have started in the kitchen area
and spread up into the roof.
Approximately 80 firefighters
under the direction of Chief Brian
Durr responded to the general
alarm. Mutual aid was received from
N. Massapequa, Farmingdale, and
Plainview who sent trucks and
men to assist at the scene to put
the blaze out. The fire was under
control at approximately 12:20 am,
LILCO also responded to the
scene to prevent an explosion in
case gas lines were the cause and
and in fact a large portion of
Hempstead Turnpike had to be
closed to facilitate the extinguishing
of the fire.
Two firefighters were injured,
one with a cut hand, the other a
broken ankle, and were treated at
Mid Island Hospital. Owners of the
catering business hope they will
be able to re-open in time for
Thanksgiving. The building is a
local landmark. Nassau County
Fire Marshalls were at the scene
investigating, the cause of the fire
is still undetermined at this time.
Above and below is the kitchen area which incurred much fire and
water damage.
SOUTH SHORE HIT BY STORM
Last Wednesday's storm certainly threw a curve ball to many South
Shore locations. Apparently the high winds and rain combining with
the high tides proved to be a flooding proposition for many a property
owner. Marinas alone the South Shore had many problems trying to
insure that boats were safe and as little damage as posible would
occur. Streets, homes and businesses were left with inches and inches
of water to mop up and LILCO had equally as many problems with
downed lines and interupted service. Meanwhile those of us living
Central Island were only aware of some winds and a Mttle rainfall.
Pictured at right is Surfside III Marina in Lindenhurst, just one of the
many docks which were hit hard by this anonymous storm. As you
Z can see the dock is totally flooded over and boat owners were trying
'" to secure their boats for the stormy night ahead.
