IRISH MINSTRELS TO PERFORM
AT COMMUNITY PARK
A performance by New England's
most popular Irish minstrels. The
Northeast Winds, will highlight the
fourth week of "Music Under the
Stars" program for Bethpage Community
Park District residents,
according to Town Councilman Thomas
L. Clark/
The program will be held at the
community park on Thursday,
August I, beginning at 8:15 p.m. In
the event of rain, the performance will
take place in the auditorium of
Bethpage High School, Cherry and
Stewart Avenues.
"The Northeast Winds is well
known throughout the northeast and
Canada for singing traditional Irish
favorites, ballads and sea shanties as
well as for their rousing inslrumen-tals,"
Councilman Clark stated. "With
four albums to their credit, the group
is now expanding its touring and is
sure to win new fans here on Long
Island."
Councilman Clark noted that the
"Music Under the Stars" series is being
sponsored by the Cultural and Performing
Arts (CAPA) Division of the
Town's Department of Community
and Youth Services.
For children, CAPA will sponsor
magician Jean Raymond Maljean at
the community park on Wednesday,
July 31, at 10:30 a.m. Maljean will
delight children of all ages as he makes
eggs, lemons and showers of coins
come out of ears and has youngsters
help him with water, flower, newspaper
and handkerchief tricks.
GRUMMAN, BOEING AND
LOCKHEED TEAM UP FOR NAVY BID
On July 16 the Grumman Corporation,
Boeing Company, and Lockheed
Corporation have signed a
memorandum of understanding to
jointly pursue the U.S. NavyV A-X
aircraft program. The A-X is expected
to replace the Grumman A-6 Intruder
medium attack plane and the cancelled
A-12.
Grumman will be the prime contractor
for the team, fhe team's tirst
milestone will be a response to the
Navy's request for proposals (RFP)
for the concept exploration phase ot
the program. The RFP is expected in
August.
Peter B. Oram, president, Grumman
Aircraft Group said, "We recognized
from the start that we needed
to merge the strengths and capabilities
of our companies in order to win the
A-X projgram."
Lockheed Aeronautical Systems
Group President Ken Cannestra said,
"This teaming arrangement will permit
the optimum combination of a
new air vehicle designed with Navy
requirements in mind and advanced
avionics technology transferred from
the F-22 Advanced Tactical Fighter,
which will minimize cost and promote
commonality between the A-X and
the F-22."
"When you combine Boeing's
strengths with Grumman's Navy
carrier aircraft experience and our
already established team relationship
with Lockheed and its capabilities, it
results in a tremendously strong
industrial partnership to satisfy the
Navy's requirement for a replacement
to the A-6," Boeing Defense & Space
Group Executive Vice President C.G.
"Jerry" King said.
Grumman has supplied Boeing with
major components for its commercial
aircraft for many years and has
worked with Lockheed on the Space
Shuttle Processing program. Lockheed
and Boeing are teammates with
General Dynamics on the U.S. Air
Force F-22 program. And on June 27
Grumman signed a teaming agreement
with Lockheed to market a new
airborne early warnmjz and control
system.
Grumman brings to the team its
experience in carrier suitability design
and support and its knowledge ol the
Navy's fighter and attack missii)ns.
Boeing offers advanced avionics
expertise, particularly as it applies to
two of the newest aircraft programs,
the F-22 and the U.S. Army's RAH-
66 Comanche attack helicopter. Lockheed,
the prime contractor on the l-
22 team, adds its low-observables and
rapid, cost-effective prototyping capabilities
to the team.
Grumman Corporation, Bethpage.
New York, is best known as a leading
maker of military aircraft and aerospace
systems. Other aircraft products
include the F-14, E-2C. FA-6B for fhe
U.S. Navy, and the Joint Surveillance
Target Attack Radar System (Joint
STARS) for the U.S. Air Force and
Army. Other businesses include integrated
information processing systems
and aluminum truck bodies. Sales in
1990 were $4 billion.
Lookheed Corporation of CalabU-sas,
California, the sixth largest U.S.
defense contractor, is primarily
involved in research, development and
production of aerospace and defense
products and systems. The Lockheed
Aeronautical Systems Group, headquartered
in Marietta, Georgia, will
be responsible for its A-X effort.
Lockheed produced the F-117 stealth
fighter and the C-130 transport for the
Air Force and the PP-3 and S-3
aircraft for the Navy. Sales in 1990
were $10 billion.
In addition to its work in neu-technology
"stealth" military airplanes,
Boeing Defense & Space
Group is the producer of the 707
AW ACS (.Airborne Warninii and
Control System) radar aircraft in
.service worldwide and has supplied
the U.S. Navy with F-6,A submarine
communications aircraft and with new
advanced composite replacement
wings for the ciirretU A-6 fleet.
