This tree on Jean Avenue totally uprooted and smashed into a parked vehicle
in the road.
A near miss on Central Boulevard as this lucVy ht)meovrner's tree narrowly
missed hitting her porch.
Monday, August 19, Long Island
had a visitor and an univited one I
might add. Bob. A hurricane which
hit many parts of Long Island with
winds well over seventy miles per hour
and over seven inches of rain.
Although it was reported that Suffolk
county was hit the hardest Bethpage
certainly took a fair share of punishment
when dear old Bob passed
through our area at approximately 12
noon.
The skies darkened and winds
kicked up as he swept through our
town which was reminicent of hurricane
Gloria which devasted many
parts of Long Island in 1985. Bob
however was not as devastating
ahhough from the pictures below it
was apparent that he did quite a bit
of damage in the three hours he visited
Bethpage.
And when il was all oser ihc skies
cleared and a beautiful cloud tilled sk\
hung over Bethpage...as though no
storm had occured. But what was left
was over 150,()()() I.II,CO customers
who were without clectricty which
included many Bethpage residents and
businesses. Frees were downed and
uprooted and may roadways such as
Farmers Avenue and Plainview road
were turned into virtual lakes. I he
clean up is still underway with many
Bethpagians still removing branches,
leaves, damaged roofs and shingles or
perhaps water damage in their homes.
And as we embark upon the official
hurricane .season we can only hope
that none of Bob or Gloria's friends
come visiting in the near future.
"Pictured above is the intersection of Lincoln Road and Linden Avenue where
a huge tree branch gave in to the seventy plus mile per hour winds.
Special thanks to Frank DeBobes for the pictures.
IVlany a tree branch could be found along Broadway as well as many a dim
stores as Bob whipped through Bethpage leaving many without lights.
